Is there parking for officers in Brooklyn? Hows the culture and work environment overall? What's the hours like for new officers? Lots of overnights and OT I'd assume?

    • I just want to give my views about the up and coming change in the bureau with the issuance of new badges and credentials. I’ve seen a lot of old heads in the BOP say we don’t need badges or say it’s a waste of time and blah blah blah. All I have to say is it’s about time the BOP is doing something about badges and updating our credentials. How can we be in an agency where the credentials look different from prison to prison. We are the federal government, we are FEDERAL LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS it’s about damn time we start looking and acting like so. I get it, we don’t need badges because the inmates already know what time it is but be grateful the agency is taking steps to make us look and be more professional! I love what I do! I love the job and I love the people I work with. A badge is more than feeling like “cop” or feeling like I have more power. It’s so much more than that and I think people in the bureau need to have more pride in our agency. It’s something tangible and it represents something that we all share working in this agency. It’s something to remind you what working for the BOP is all about. It about having pride in doing what we do. If you don’t like it and think it’s stupid then go work somewhere else because I know for damn sure those people that talk crap about getting badges and new creds are gonna be the first ones to be flashing that **** around, acting a fool, and posting it to there Instagram trying to be someone that they ain’t. Like I said before the BOP is in the spotlight. I know for sure big things are coming to the agency, I know it’s been a pipe dream for majority of the time but now lots of things are coming to light and we have a lot of eyes on us. Good and bad but we have a lot of people pushing for better pay, equipment and much more. So if you’re along for the ride then have a seat and let’s go but if you have nothing but negative energy and are bad mouthing the agency you are the ones holding us back. Find a new career that better fits your needs if the BOP isn’t meeting it. Have more pride people! Because it’s the negative people in our own agency that’s putting a black eye on it’s own people.

Denver81 Hey man that’s good for you. Some people use the BOP as a stepping stone and that’s great. But some also put their whole career into the BOP and that’s also great. It’s not about who has the better job/who gets paid more. The BOP is great to some people and isn’t to others. And we SHOULD have badges because the last time I checked we are a FEDERAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY. Now we might not be kicking in doors and driving around lights and sirens but we are fulfilling a law enforcement objective. Officers working at a USP probably see more action than a sheriff deputy in a small area who in your terms is a “cop”. We aren’t cops. I never did say we were. But yes we are Federal Law Enforcement officers. Last I checked we get the same benefits and retirement that FBI,DEA,ATF get. If you never worked a USP and I mean a rocking and rolling joint, then you can’t sit there and say the BOP isn’t a law enforcement or in your words a “cop” job because we seen way more action then any of these beat cops outside the compound. And we ain’t need no stinking gun to get stuff done either.

Is your name Shane Fausey? Because that's the only person I'm aware of who is all for badges and credentials. Nobody, and I mean *nobody* at my institution cares about getting new agency trinkets. Staff deserve more pay. Period. Show us the money, Bureau-wide. And speaking of "pride in your agency" I've personally seen this agency cover up multiple homicides , especially in SHU. We should also show pride in an agency which is willfully negligent with institutional health hazards. The CDC recently issued a report that that staff at a federal detention center should wear "gas masks and SCBA's" during routine interactions with inmates! So please, spare us(veteran staff) the BS about the BOP.

The only reason the BOP is classified as a "Federal Law Enforcement Agency" is because of OPM definition, by the way that definition is way outdated. The last time I checked BOP doesn't enforce laws, they enforce internal rules which is not laws. As far USP staff seeing more action, of course, when most of the inmates housed at a USP are violate of course there is going to be more problems.

BOP trains their people to be correctional workers, not law enforcement officers. I’ve seen BOP creds, and you don’t need anything more than that. Try to make an arrest … you’re not trained for that, and have extremely limited authority. If an arrest is made on prison grounds, it’s the USMS, FBI, or OIG. As to a small town deputy sheriff, you have no idea what their job entails. If you need help, you hit your body alarm or dial 222 and help quickly arrives. A deputy may have to wait 20 minutes for help to arrive. A prison job is potentially very dangerous, but let’s not call a cook foreman (for example) a LEO.

    • Does anyone know a good way to prepare for the core values assessment? I applied several months ago but failed by one question, and I am thinking of reapplying in the future if none of the application processes I am currently going through are successful.

      • I was at an interview last week for a different and one of the other applicants was current BOP. He said something about it taking a year for them to send new hires to FLETC. Is that true?

Also wanted to say that working at a USP is considered a "badge of honor" among its staff. I worked in one for 3 years before I decided to transfer back home to a cushy low. With that said, you're running on adrenaline all shift long and your cortisol levels are through the roof. Not to mention the mandates are out of control as well . So you will probably develop heart issues some time during your career if you continue on that track. It's all fun until you get your blood work done and your physician gives you a reality check.

          • Anyone know which facilities are currently hiring? I haven’t heard back from the two that I placed in my application.

Ask HR if their custody complement is not at 100%, then why are they not hiring?

I left the BOP in April of 2022. When I left, we had CO’s hitting their two-year mark who still had not attended FLETC. However, from what I’ve been told… BOP’s “academy” is now ONE week at FLETC which is utterly comical and that all the rest of your training is done at your institution, so who knows

As soon as it’s a virtual training I can do from home, I’m signing the dotted line.

Give it another year or so and I’m sure it’ll get there... new staff can sit on their couch at home in boxers and a polo and attend the BOP academy on Zoom for four hours to become Correctional experts.

I wish I went to virtual academies. If they say “drop and give me 10,” I can just duck below the camera, sit, grunt and count.

They could Fed Ex my badge and gun.
