  • Iowa was spot on. Location sucks. I'l add here is some of the internal deal with Thomson. They have a decent Warden now and from my former co workers there they have some solid staff now but it has its issues. I watched several staff transfer there from my USP. Most were biding time till they can get another transfer. The problem is when they activate a brand new prison you have a lot of BOP transfer in from all over. The problem is it almost never works out with a USP as 80% plus have never worked in a USP (aka where real thugs are) and have never seen a bloody nose fist fight. The issue that elevates Thomson is it is the new Special Management Unit as they are reassigning Lewisberg to a FCI.

So when Tomson activated you had mid and upper management transferring in that category that are two types. First have no clue that bad things happen as they have never worked a cell unit in any USP or even been inside a USP. Second is the Ostrich head in the sand type. Those types know stuff happens but they keep their head in the sand because they are there for 18 month to put a "I was at a Administrative USP to promote out" types. And don't want to get caught up in anything to hinder a transfer as they can't get away fast enough.

    Good luck

Lots of good information there...............lots of BOP guys/gals on the forum
I don't think this site is moderated anymore or even exists - started to go downhill after I heard that it was blocked from BOP computers.

Most corrections/former corrections lurk over at https://www.reddit.com/r/OnTheBlock/

It's mostly inmates attending courts and some permanent if it's anything like MDC LA. Lots of elevator usage and if the layout is the same as MDC --North and South sides for inmate housing. Don't know much else.

          • I wanted to ask if anyone has insight about detention centers in general. Is there a rover or compound officer that walks the facility all day with two officers in each unit. Are the floors organized by security level? (Low, medium, high)

is it better than working at a USP or FCI?

There is compound officers and high has (2) COs in each unit, however they may not always be together i.e. one doing hall and another at entry/exit. It depends on what you like but starting at a USP will assist you in becoming a better CO with a keen eye and attention to detail.

            • Hope everyone is doing well. Does anyone know what it is like working at an FMC these days? I am thinking of making Devens my first choice but I want to know if an FMC would be a good place to start as a CO.

(footnote: I don't work for BOP but I used to be a state CO)

Depends what you want out of being a CO. I can't imagine an FMC has as much "action" as a USP. Being a CO isn't all about cracking skulls. It's alot of people skills and talking to people. However there is a benefit in knowing how to handle high stress situations like a large fight. You might have limited opportunity at an FMC to get experience handling high stress situations.

            • I worked as a state CO for about a year before I went back to college. Now 3 years later I'm working a cushy office job and I'm honestly pretty sick of the corporate bull**** that comes along with an office job. I applied to BOP and this is my first time ever navigating a federal hiring process so I have some questions.

              - I submitted my application on USAJOBS. I got BQ on GL5 and GL7, HQ on GL6. What happens now? I'm guessing my application will make it ways to a live person for review then be forwarded to the facilities I selected?

              - How long can the hiring process take? I'm guessing that's entirely dependent on each facility but I know for my state DOC the whole hiring process from start to finish took about 9 months.

              - I've heard BOP does your background investigation after you're hired. Personally this has me a little sketched out because I'm not comfortable taking a job unless I know I've passed all the hiring pre-requisites. What exactly are the disqualifiers? I'd be pretty mad if I got hired and then 6 months in they told me I failed the background for some dumb **** like "oh you got fired from your high school job 7 years ago so we're not accepting you".

Keyturner Yeah I'm not sure if BOP will be my career yet. Right now my plan is to use them to get back into corrections work then work there while I finish my bachelors degree. Once that's all done if I like working there I'll stay. If I don't like it I'll try to transfer to some other federal agency. I also like the ability to transfer to facilities nationwide since my girlfriend and I both want to leave Oregon.

AlphaFreeze, I mean this respectfully and as a constructive kind if way BOP have great staff and some bucket heads like any agency. That said when it comes to the bucket heads. You might want ro maybe not telegraph your desire to use BOP as a springboard. Some staff can take a narrow view towards folks that do that and make it not pleasant.
The reasons, For one it comes across as arrogant and 2 there is no guarantee doors will open Federal wise. BOP is full of staff with 20 years in that didnt and think they'd be there long. The money, comfort of not moving or life or kids sometimes dictates otherwise.

My advise (and I've worked 2 municipke agencies, was a contract guard for USMS and Military) and retired BOP and served as a LT) If you want to kick in doors find a proactive municiple PD as the Feds aint it.

So while desire to advance I can appreciate gauge your audience because not everyone does..

                Good luck

                @in625shooter

Oh yeah I'm aware not to make it known. It was similar when I worked as a state CO. We didn't care much for the people who came there talking about how after their year (the probationary period) they were gonna lateral to a county jail and make more money, or try to use the DOC experience to get on with a PD. Made us not want to waste the time training them. Supervisors didn't want to assign them to chill posts and instead gave those to the dedicated COs.

As of now, I am totally fine with making BOP a career assuming its at least somewhat similar to the work I was doing at the state - which I imagine it will be minus policies and procedural things. I'm still waiting to hear back for an interview. I was told the facility I applied at pulls their BQ list on a monthly basis. I retook the exam and now have BQ on GL5/6/7 with disabled veterans preference. So fingers crossed I hear something this month.

Most BOP employees either don't have the motivation or the skills/education necessary to advance in other federal law enforcement agencies. The job can be dangerous but its easy and people get comfortable. I definitely wouldn't advertise your intentions of leaving but keep putting in those apps on usajobs.

If you did it all the way back in June I'd probably call. Thats way longer than it should take. Usually they run 90 day lists.

                Good luck

Like shooter said, give them a call. It took me about 3 months from UA/Physical day to EOD so everywhere is different.

            • Just got this email today from a facility in West Virginia. Doesn't interest me since I'm on the west coast but figured I'd share it for anybody out east looking to get on with BOP.
