  • Anyone on here from Pekin, IL? Trying to get some info on that location. Also, anyone come over from the Border Patrol? Wouldn’t mind hearing about pros and cons from someone who has been through it.

    • Who does the reference checking when transferring internally? Is it HR or the Warden? I’ve been trying to move back home to Honolulu and get on with the FDC. I’m currently located at FCC Florence. I know the first few times I put in I was bouncing around all the institutions so I didn’t really get to establish Report with the higher ups due to being moved all over the complex. Now I’m station at one permanently and have established that report. This past one I put in was in Dec 2019. BQ and got referred. Couple weeks ago got an email stating no one was picked. Also on usajobs were it usually says referred in green letters now say canceled in red letters. First time I have seen this. They also reference checking was conducted but asked around and nobody said they were contacted for a reference check.

        Just like a regular promotion a lateral does the Capt to Capt AW to AW and Warden to Warden vouch. The GOOD thing is I gour case of a lateral it's not a super isor so the RD wo t have to check the box.

        My suggestion get with your Capt and your AW and just ask if they know anyone at Honolulu. How it works is they have probably been to LTs Capt or AW train in ng. They always make deals. And with that being home it can be in your favor. Also if you have let them know they can maybe call and that's generally how laterals get announced. The Warden hears from his AW wtc someone wants to come there so he has HR post it. In the old days it was just a Warden to Wardwn Memo and mich easier.

        As for the canceled spot. Who know they do that sometimes no rhyme no reason

          I recently applied and have been referred, finally after 3 years of applying. I am currently a Police Officer for the Veterans Affairs but am looking for something more rewarding. How long is the hiring process? And are there opportunities to transfer? I'd like to transfer to California eventually. Pros/cons? Thank you for your help in advance and looking forward to hearing your guys advice/comments.

            Hiring process can take anywhere 3-8 months depending on how much officers the institution is hurting for them. My process took about 3months but I have my application in for about 2years prior. My advice to make the process go faster is to contact the institution that you’re trying to get on with and ask if they can put you in contact with HR. Phone numbers and email address to the institution can be found on bop.gov If you are willing to move to another state to get on with an institution that is hurting for officers that would be how you can get the process moving a lot faster. I tried getting on with the FDC back in Hawaii for 2years with no luck. So my third year trying to get in I started emailing institutions in California, Seattle and Colorado and got a hit with Colorado. Got put into contact with HR and she helped push my application along very quickly. It took all about 3months from start to finish. And moving around in the BOP from what I heard is very easy. As long as you’re a decent officer and keep your nose clean from all the bs you’ll be fine. I’ve even heard crap staff getting transferred but that’s to and far in between. Also if you’re a veteran you’ll have a better chance of getting in faster as your at the top of the list. I believe they go thru all the VA applicants first before hiring non VA.

            Hiring is fairly fast and straightforward compared to other agencies. Mine took about five months from applying to working. You'll definitely be given the opportunities to transfer if you want, it's also the fastest way of moving up the ranks if you plan to make a career out of it. California has a wide variety of institutions. If you want places where a lot of actions goes down (I wouldn't, but some people like that) pick Victorville or Atwater. If you want to work in a more jail environment pick either MCC San Diego or MDC Los Angeles. If you just want to work with women then there is Dublin. So, there is pretty much is an institution for whatever you want. I don't work for the BOP anymore, but it's what you make of it, I don't regret my time there.

            Thank you guys for the advice and comments! I contacted HR today, she was very helpful and I did make the list and should be receiving the OF-5 tomorrow. Crossing my fingers, I hear this is a very promising career.

        • Anyone knows time frame after JSTARS submitted before here back for final offer? Also what’s the difference between FDC and FCI, being hired on as GS-7

            Final offer can be anytime. Depends on institution and the Covid has little bearing. Some places are slow (and always seems slower when your the one) Hiring in as a GS 7 is new ground.

            FDC and FCI the difference is FDC has all security levels but you won't deal with them long term. FCI is low or Medium and they are longer terms as that will be where they are designated.

            And you will see some stuff at an FCIs. Nothing like a USP but some where FDCs have little incidents.

        • Has the hiring timeline been affected by the covid19 situation? Process taking more than the expected 80-90 day timeframe?
          background investigations not being able to be completed at this time due to previous employers not being open for business?

            Its slowed some but not to a big extent. the BG stuff shouldn't be a factor.

            I do not know if you have already been referred, but I know they just pulled a roster a few weeks ago. I just missed the first one since I applied too late. I called HR yesterday and the lady told me that the next roster would most likely be pulled in July.

            I got a conditional offer and sent my eQIP 2-3 weeks ago for Coleman and still waiting on the firm offer. I’m sure it won’t be too long though.

            Fury1508, thank you for the heads up, it appears that I missed the last roster they pulled as well, I BQ and was referred, but i changed my location from MDC San Diego to FCC Coleman.

        • So, I applied to location A about six weeks ago. Location B wrote and said they have openings and to change my #1 choice to location B if I'm interested. Any idea why things haven't moved forward with location A and why my application was moved to location B?

            Might not have openings. But location b does and is actively recruiting. You can try and wait or try and get in now. Seniority is everything the longer you're in

            I had a start date at Colman but took another position. I just still get emails.

        • I understand normally new CO’s start out as GL5, but recently I have been hearing of people getting hire on as 6 or even 7.

          anyone hear the same?

          Does Anyone know how difficult it is to receive pay retention?

            If you have prior Leo experience you can come on as a 6 or 7. Prior jobs, education, resume all matter. I came back as a 7 but I was with the bureau before. A few people at my joint also started as 7s but all were former Leo either state or feds. The newest class is all 5s.

          • Can anybody explain to me what type of training we would receive as new hires? What worries me is that state and county correction jobs go through extensive training for 3-4 months and at BOP from what I’ve heard you get thrown out to the wolves. I’ve been told when you start you go through a 2 week orientation and don’t go to FLETC until 8-9 months on the job. Eventually when you go to FLETC, it’s only 3 weeks long! I just want to get home to my family safe and want to know that I can rely on my training when things go south. I know there is no such thing as a safe law enforcement job but it’s a concern of mine and would like some clarity.

              Sounds about right. 2 weeks of power points and then your on a post. I'm over 9 months in and no word on a FLETC date.

              Thousands of BOP staff members go home to their families each night. In the general view there are very few injuries on the job in ANY correctional environment. The BOP is no better or worse than any other agency

              The 2 weeks is called Institution Familiarization or IF Mostbof first AM is signing stacks ofnpaoerwork and getting a slew of Health Insurance options Then exec staff will come d***lenyku with their lack of brilliance .

              Then you will get an overview on different BOP missions and your institution specific stuff Other departments will go through stuff and as for ours we have about 3 days of custody specific things.

              We follow with a week if OJT where you shadow staff on a post sort of getting your feet wet. The by week 4 your on your own If your at a USP you will be with a 2nd Officer which is better than 20 years ago when at USPs no gas you just got thrown to the wolves literally.

              If your at a FCI or low your co workers stories will be the worst thing. You will see someone that is solid so just sort of takes advice from those types. You will also see some that you wouldn't hire to scoop up dog poo, stay away from those idiots.

              And for the love of God dont boast about any Master Jedi status you might have or how the state did it or you will become "That Rookie"

          • The BOP seems to hold that the important points of the job are gotten on the job. You will likely have access to senior officers for guidance. Remember, call another officer if you have questions, not the Lt.. Frankly, over the years I sort of subscribe to this theory. Seems crazy but I works!

              After 40 some yrs in the profession (most of it in State Corrections) I think the best advice I received about surviving in the Correctional environment is to spend your probation period watching and listening TWICE as much as speaking.

              Watch everything, listen to everyone ..................then pick a couple or three of the officers you like the way they work and try to get them to mentor you. If the way they do their jobs works....emulate them and call them when you need advice

              Also watch and listen to the others.......see what they do that is "wrong" or that doesn't work well and make sure you don't act that way

          • Thank you all for giving me some clarity. I have never worked in corrections or have been inside a prison so I was worried about the training I would receive.

              Neither had I. I'm on my 3rd prison in less than 5 years pondering a move for a supervisory position now. Hopefully GS 11 with an automatic 12.

              It's the worst training you'll ever receive in your life. Two weeks of PowerPoints followed by a week of tours and a couple hours each day both on the compound and in housing units. Then you're on your own from there on out. That being said, observe, ask questions, and then ask the same questions again to other staff. You'll quickly realize who you shouldn't follow/shouldn't emulate. I'm serious though, I've had quite a few jobs in quite a few sectors, and this is by far the worst training of them all. One guy I trained with said he received better, more comprehensive training cashiering at a grocery store, and I believe him. Between crabby, old staff members who hate their jobs and staff members who have a "handle your sh*t, rookie mentality," you'll find a few good

              ....staff you can count on to guide you through the ropes. It may sound like I'm negative, but I actually enjoy it a lot. It's better to be upfront and know what you're getting into, though.

              Andooped Thank you, and no you don’t sound negative at all. I am in the process with a local law enforcement job and want to weigh my options. I expect a firm offer from BOP on 6/14 and wanted to make sure I am making the right decision. Again, only thing that concerns me about BOP is training when I start but I believe you. We have the same mentality at TSA which sucks.

          • Does anyone have guidance on negotiating your starting grade/step. I received a conditional for GL 6 due to my LE experience. I am currently a GS 6-1 but my pay is more than GL 6-1 for the BOP. I was told from a buddy that they would match my highest pay and line it up with the proper grade/step with the BOP. Wondering if there is any truth to that. Looking at the pay scale, looks like i should be coming in as a GL 6-3. And if that is the case, will I be a 7-4 after a year?

            Just passed my interview and have my physical and drug test scheduled.
