  • Hi guys and gals. I applied a few weeks ago and I was curious how long the hiring process usually takes on average from the date of applying?

Most places I've seen they are either on 10s or 12 in power house

Call the facility or take a look at the vacancy announcement. They're 24 hours most places, so typically 8 hrs or 12 hrs on a rotating schedule.

yaaa, I called HR and they had no idea what shift their powerhouse works lol They game me their extention but no one answered. I know some places are 24 hour shifts working 12's and some are not 24 hours and they work 10's.

  • any info on these locations? morale? schedule?

Big spring is near the oil boom.
      Beaumont is hoping
3 rivers is close to a large city. Of the three I'd pick 3 rivers. But I've never been to Texas, then Beaumont

What is Beaumont hoping for? To be the next American Idol? The FCI's are all medium security. So, usually less action and stress. If you're young and enjoy dealing with a lot of emergencies, the FCC is your best bet. Those are complex' and have several different security level institutions. I've worked all levels within the BOP.

  • of the three which has the most action and which is boring/mundane?

My guess is it’s near an oil field.

Middle of nowhere and probably higher cost of living because of the oil jobs nearby

Many facilities are short staffed. I've worked at several and this was the case at most. Corrections isn't for most people.

  • New to this forum, I am in Arizona & trying to get my foot in the door w/FCI Phoenix or one of the prisons in Tucson. I emailed HR & he said I qualify for GL-05 with 3 years security experience(I have 11 total). Do anyone know anything about FCI Phoenix & if they're currently hiring.

I'm pretty sure that's a desirable location. So, it may be more difficult to get selected there. If you want in now, apply to some of the facilities in California and relocate for a few years (FCI Herlong, FCI Mendota, FCC Victorville, USP Atwater). The BOP is very lateral friendly as long as you're half decent at your job.

  • Is the rumor true that USP Yazoo City is transferring their inmates to USP Pollock? Is USP Yazoo City being shuttered?

I know last year one entire housing unit (out of three) at USP Pollock was vacant, undergoing major maintenance.

It's unlikely. They're feeling the staffing issues like many institutions, but they recently advertised for promotional boards at that location. It wouldn't make sense to promote a bunch of officers just to lay them off or relocate them to other facilities.

I'd only believe half what you see and nothing you hear. As far as inmate moves several new institutuons have some vacant units. Some in the case of Berlin due to staffing g that far north hard to get a lot of folks. Others more due to a reduced in mates population the last 5 years. (From 200,000 to like 180,000 just in BOP facility it including contract joints)

As far as other issues (maintenance etc) nit uncommon for them to shuffle inmates. But the conspiracy and rumor mill staff will say what they want ithers to believe.

Roger that, thanks. I know there are political and economic considerations involved in the overall process when BOP chooses a location for a new joint. But some places are truly in the middle of nowhere, difficult to attract staff, minimal local housing available, etc.

      • After some unofficial recruiting work on my part, I got a dentist friend to apply to the continuously-open announcement. He completed and submitted the online application eight days ago. His USAJOBS status still is "Received." Is there a customary lag time before Grand Prairie processes and rates an application (BQ, etc), and the status updates? I know they're drowning in paperwork there, and was just curious how much radio silence is OK before one should start to be concerned.

DP23 you need to reanswer the questions till you get best qualified. You only need to be able to justify one response in the answer

DP - I wouldn't inflate your experience to BQ. It'll come out in your background investigation and you'll be terminated if it's an integrity issue. Rate yourself as high as possible, while still be honest and forthcoming.

Nieto2588 I didn't switch the answers to lie, I reselected another answer I had experience in. It still didn't work as I still only got HQ so I'm not gonna bother it anymore. If I get an interview cool if not that's cool too.

Got a status report today by calling HR at Grand Prairie. They were very polite and helpful. Their goal is to review and rate an application within two weeks of receipt. Grand Prairie is short several HR specialists right now, and they hope to fill those HR vacancies soon. Those HR vacancies are negatively impacting their processing times, to their acknowledged displeasure.

That's usually the case. Two weeks is actually a tremendous turn around time for them. Some vacancies go 4-6 months before they invite candidates to participate in the interview and other hiring steps.

      • As of this morning I am no longer a BOP employee and out of corrections. I start working for Homeland Security tomorrow.

CBP or BP? BOP experience is looked highly upon by other federal LE agencies due to the environment staff are exposed to. Congrats.

      • Say someone completed several years of service with BOP (including the Core Values Assessment pre-hire), obtained permanent employee status after probation year, went to Glynco, etc., and then left BOP in good standing for other opportunities. Now say they want to return to BOP after being gone less than two years. Do they have to repeat the CVAT and/or other pre-employment actions other than getting referred by Grand Prairie? Can they just be vouched for, or do they need to do the interview, physical, report writing scenario, etc?

If you leave the BOP at any point, you'll be required to complete the same hiring process again. They may use your previous background, but they'll still update it. If you leave for more than (3) years, you'll have to complete the BOP academy at FLETC again. I've been there, done that. Let me know if you have any questions.

      • I continually get Highly Qualified, yet no referral. Putting in for MCC NY and FCI Fairton. Any tips?

You can still rate yourself high if you have any experience in what it's asking. You'll notice many of the questions are, "Have you EVER". Since this is the wording, it doesn't have to be a normal or recurring duty, but simply one that you've accomplished.

I seen folks under sell them selves on the vacancy questions because they don't want to "lie". Never lie because you have to support it in your resume anyway.

That being said if you have done the thing the question is asking for choose the best response that you have done. Its not asking If you did ALL the things in the answer, if you did a single one out of 6 listed then that answer fits you.

      • Within the BOP, do most facilities have different units? Investigations, special response, etc...That would be something that definitely interests me, if I get in and put my time in.
