I bought my house when I was a DOD Guard, I bought it specifically because it moved me closer to work. I had applied to the BOP job a WHILE ago

Everyone (or most everyone) coming g over goes to a 5 or 6 step whatever.
A friend was a Army NG tech as a WS something and come in as a 6 step 10 with BOP when they hired most at GS 6
so if i get hired at gl-5 step 4, then next year i will be gl-6 step 5 then gl-7 step 6?

I could be wrong but I believe coming over from another agency you start hire (at say a GL 5 step whatever but at your year with BOP you would go to a 6 then a 7. Then after that where ever you are step wise you would fall on that however many years between.

are they required to match the pay? or is it there choice.
Pursuant to 5 U.S.C. 5334(b), the two-step promotion rule states that a GS employee promoted to a position in a higher grade is entitled to basic pay at the lowest rate of the higher grade that exceeds his or her existing rate of basic pay by not less than two step increases of the grade from which promoted. A promotion is defined in 5 CFR 531.203 as a GS employee’s movement from one GS grade to a higher GS grade while continuously employed (including such a movement in conjunction with a transfer).
Pay should be set for an employee promoted from GS-5, step 5, on special salary rate table 983Q to a GL-6 position in RUS in 2014 as follows:
This is part of my response from OPM the relevant portion as it pertains to transfers of GS employees, I'm not sure how that works for personnel in Pay bands since TSA uses pay bands. E-mail [email protected] they've gotten back to my pretty quickly with a response. The crucial step that caused my issue is the HR staff over looked this step:
Step C Determine the payable (highest) rate of basic pay for the step or rate determined in step B by applying any locality payment or special rate supplement applicable to the given grade, based on the employee's position of record before promotion and official worksite after promotion.
The payable (highest) rate of basic pay for GS-5, step 7, is the corresponding GS-5, step 7, on special rate table 983Q ($42,891)Last edited by dod299; 10-18-2016, 03:55 AM.

Hey guys!
After nearly 2 years with an application in I finally got a call to interview at FCI Bennettsville, SC!
I currently work for state probation and I have a question I am hoping you can help me with.
I applied for this position at the GS-5 level since I only had military exp and a bachelor degree when I applied. I now have over a year and a half exp as a probation officer. When I go to this interview next week at the federal prison will it be appropriate to ask them to start me out at a higher step in GS-5 to match my current pay? I am currently making ~40k/year and I really want to be federal, but I don't want to take a pay cut!
Looking at the CHARLOTTE-CONCORD, NC-SC GS scale for 2016 I would need at least GS-5 step 7...which is $38,811, is this realistic to obtain or am I gonna take a pay cut to go federal. Or am I missing some extra pay this table is not showing.
So in a nut shell:
1.) Is it appropriate to ask about pay at this upcoming interview
2.) Is asking them to match my state pay at around GS-5 step 7 (~39k/year) ever going to happen.
Thanks in advance guys, ill continue looking through these 216 pages =).
EDIT:
I found I was not looking at the LEO pay table, but now I am! GS-5 step 1 pay will work for me, but I'll still ask is this upcoming interview of mine the appropriate time to ask for a step increast to 2 or 3 due to my exp in probation.Last edited by Achyuta; 10-18-2016, 10:04 AM.

How it use to work is with a year experience you started at GL 6 step 1 and clever/Military VRA 5 step 1. However they have started bringing everyone on at 5 step 1 to save money. Its up to the Warden. It probably won't work in your favor but by all means ask the HR person you never know

If 2 people hire in the same day one as a 5 step 1 other 6 step 1. At the year mark the 5 goes to a 6 step 2 and the 6 goes to a 7 step 2. At the end of year 2 they both are a 7 step 3. The only thing the one starting out as a 6 is they had their 7 for a year so they are eligible to put in for their 8. However most don't or shouldn't get their 8 until they have 5 years in.
