  • Thank you for your reply! I am about to turn to that mystical age of 37, I need to stop my clock & I'm not FED LEO... Just remembered I am able to get a waiver for my age. I would entertain taking a lower pay to start... even if it is a 5 step 1 (lots of savings and the wife kills it!) Since I'm a 9 I would hate to have to go back to a 5 and work up or past my current grade. So was thinking if I get in as a 5 can I apply for 6,7,8,9 and 11 since I have time in grade as a 9?

The main reason I am thinking about applying is for the promotion potential and it does not take over a year to get in...

If I apply and get a position inside a joint starting out as a GL 5 Step 0 ( I hear they must match my salary... I am GS 9 Step 8). Can I apply for other positions within BOP as soon as I get my foot in the door? I really like the job description for Special Investigative Support Technician and the Correctional Treatment Specialist (Reentry Affairs Coordinator) positions.

        My background...

        M.S. in Criminal Justice

        Former Police Officer (5 years)

        10 pts. Combat Vet

        Current Fed employee
Pay matching is a standard practice across the fed. They will move you to the step that is equal to or slightly above what you were making before. If step 10 of the grade you hold is equal to or less than your highest rate of pay, you will be a step 10 until you reach a grade that has steps less than 10 that are equal to or slightly higher than your highest rate of pay.

        Your case. GS9-8 RUS non-LEO equals $60,391. GL5-10 RUS LEO equals $49,552. GL6-10 RUS LEO equals $52,834. GL7-10 RUS LEO equals $57,381.

If you come on as a CO, you will be a 5-10, then a 6-10 and then a 7-10 and you will remain stepped out until you are a 9 or higher again.

            • Also from the boards I have read that the PT has changed for the BOP... I'm a bit older but a PT horse (Old combat Days LOL... ALWAYS READY mentality, ya know!) I can do my 1.5 mile in 10:06 these days ( Bad knees from the war, wish I could do better!) 78 push ups 2 min, 106 sit ups 2 min and 23 pull ups... if I can do my pull ups first in the PT event I can rock out at least 30 to 36, only if that is the first event! After the run I'm burnt out (knees) do you BOP guys do pull ups first or is it the run? I found some stuff that people joke about the PT portion of the BOP on the boards but I have found nothing on the FLETC sight about PT standards for BOP. Although I have heard friends say there is not much of a stander and I should have nothing to worry about, I still would like to know...

Oh.. I heard something about a dummy drag??? What's that about? anyone have a link or some info on the BOP PT test they can send my way?

              Thanks in advance!

You can apply as long as you have your year etc in the certain pay grade but where you will run into issues is being "Best Qualified" since you were not in the 007 series. With a degree you would be able to satisfy a lot on say the case manager side but you won't be able to stay in custody as a 9 LT without being an 8 for a year (in all but an extreme case) and getting ones GL 8 is a coveted thing and can be quite the task. Lots of competition for 8's.

                    • Would I limit myself if I did go the case manager side of the joint? I'm thinking about jumping ship from my current gig (for a LEO status) but am on the fence... Would you think it would look bad on me if i do apply and get in as a 5 or a 6 and in the first month (couple) apply for say a GL 9 as a counselor? I'm thinking... on one hand I should go for it and apply and see if I can make the most out of a lifetime in the BOP, I would just hate to take 4 steps back to do it! Thanks, much appreciated!

                      • Can anybody give a run down of the shifts a CO could work? i understand there is the normal 8-4, 4-12, and 12-8 but are there any other shifts that could be worked?

                        • Interfector, there may be a policy in place limiting when you can apply for another Grade... but I am not sure, you could ask them though.

                          • Thanks for the reply and the information! I think I might just wait it out and see what happens with an another agency and just chill here... I would hate to take a slot from another candidate that has been waiting to get in with them, since i'm on the fence... I would hate to do that to someone who might have gotten the call but instead HR spent the time with me, ya know?

Interfector, I mean this respectfully but you probably should slow down. You are not going to blow through the ranks/grades of BOP. Your issue is you might have been a GS 9 but unless it wasin the 007 (Correctional Officer) series you will only be eligible to apply because of your TIG but you will not be Best Qualified (BQ) which you have to be to make the desk to have a chance. And further more no warden will even consider promotng yoy into an 8 SOS or SIS TECH or 9 LT without you taking your lumps.

For a 9 counslor you HAVE to be a GL 8 in the 007 series with very few exceptions.

As far as time constraints it use to be 90 days in you could apply but I believe it is a year because you generally have tio be off any probationary status and even though you are vested you are still on probation and subject to clearing the public trust background investigation (unless you currently have a Public Trust clearance and secret clearences don't count)

As far as looking bad it doesnt, people put in for jobs if for nothing else to get the experience of applying. There is an art to getting your paperwork right to BQ and sometimes it takes a few times. People move up and down in BOP all the time. People step down from LT to GL 8's or 9 councilors you name it all the time for family issues, you name it, they might have a ding but they can reapply for a LT and get it back. I have seen about everything in 16 years.

As far as steps back, its all about your comfort level and what do you want in 20 years, is advancement in pay with step increases etc and the LE retirement worth it? Is the changing shifts and jobs every month for your first year on the rookie roster, working every holiday, getting mandatoried, not having the seniority so you work the weekends, you cant get the job or shift you want because of seniorty and every other bad thing BOP staff (especially at USP's) face worth it? Only you can answer that!

You get your foot in the door you would have no problem getting a case manager job which would be a 5,7.9. 11 job automatically so maybe but be patient it wont happen overnight and again I mean this respectfully but no one in BOP gives 2 hoots about you having a Masters, or prior military or federal civlian service, the only thing they care is will you be there when the staff member is dealing with a fight or will you be one of the going the other way types" again just what they will look for before they accept you. At the USP level anyway.

                              Good luck

It really depends on the institution. The majority of places have the Days 8-4 Evenings 4-midnight and Mornings Midnight -8 however a couple go 6-2. 2-10 and 10-6. Others have the 8-4, 4-12 and 12-8 with am 6-2 and pm 2-10 to suppliment and overlap like your SHU posts and such. also the 32 officers in housing units at USP's were 2-10 but at ours are getting ready to go all 3 shifts and changing to 8-4, 4-12 and 12-8.

There are even a couple places that have a couple 4 10 hour shofts but those are only a couple I know of and you better have seniority for those posts.

So again it really can depend on the institution but MOST are on the same page, some are not

                              • Does an 8 promotion have to come from within your institution or can you "chase" it?
