Ah yes I understand that part. I meet the requirements for 06 level so with the same answers I figure it would be BQ as well. Anyways...if I cannot figure it out should I withdraw the hq 06 and keep the BQ 05? Thank you

You can tweak the GL 6 experience but in all seriousness it don't matter. What has been practiced since about 2010 time frame Most Wardens are starting all CO's out at the GL 5 rate, even if they BQ for a 6. It is a money saving thing and a 5 and a 6 will both be at the same 7 step 3 rate at the start of year 3 if they both hired in together. Does it blow? Sure but not as bad as some things can.

While that is true, the person who started as a 6 will make more in year one as a 6-1 and more in year two as a 7-2. The person who started as a 6 will also have time-in-grade as a 7 a year earlier and thereby be eligible for an 8 or a 9 a year earlier.

Your splitting hairs. Most people make a pretty good raise coming into BOP that the 1,500 to 2,000 difference is negligible.

Just relaying what I have seen it shift to in 16 plus years. Yeah its BS but on the scale of BS very very low. And most people are just happy to get on and besides, its the Wardens house and its legal so what choice do they have??

          • This step thing is confusing but thanks for the information. I'm good with the bq at 05 bc I cannot tweak the 06 to bq even tho I meet everything. Thanks!

It may not matter. Lots of wardens will only want 5 lists as they can generally get enough people to take the job as a 5. The only places I know of hiring at 6 are the places in desperate need of people.

When one starts om Federal civlian service they start out at whatever grade (5,6 etc) at step 1, then after a year go up. In BOP's case if you start at a 5 step 1 at your 1 year mark you go to a GL 6 step 2 (about a 4,000 raise) then at the start of second year you go to GL 7 step 3. (so at the 3 year mark a person starting as a GL 5 will be a 7 step 3 just like someone starting on the same day as a 6 would be a 7 step 3). The ONLY advantage someone has starting as a 6 is they would have their 7 for a year thus making them elegible to put in for their 8. I said elegible since most won't and shouldnt get their 8, most are not ready until they have 5 or more years in. (JMHO from 16 years in)

Now for any step increases beyound that you go up to step 4 the next year then its every 2 years until step 6 I believe then every 3 years (but could have it confused since I was a stepped out GL 8 and GS 9 and 11 LT for a while and quit staying on it so someone more familiar feel free to pipe in). You top out at stepm 10. You can get a Quality Step Increase (QSI) and get bumped up to the next step if you get an Outstanding eval.

The key if you want more jobs to open up if you need to make your GL 8. That makes you elegible to put in for a GL 9 which the 9 makes you elegible for an 11 etc etc. If thats what you want, then there are people that are content with their GL 8 and homestead as that OR they get out ofcustody ionto facilities etc.

The most powerful job in BOP is a GL 8 step 10 Senior Officer Specialist WITH seniority. They get to choose their shift, job, days off, vacation and O/T and work where they want not where the Captain wants as they do when you are a LT.

                • ^thank you for the insight

I was a little more involved in this thread in the past. I just re did my application and updated a bunch of information. I know some people that know people who work at Oxford, WI and I was told to not put that as my first choice. I now have Chicago MCC as choice one. I used to be a little more flexible with location including Pekin and Terre Haute but have since moved north and that is a little out of range. Any insight on Chicago's hiring needs and if/when they pull lists?

It made take 100 phone calls for them to answer one. I'm just being honest.

That's just a renewal of the "open continuous". No different than all of the other open continuous announcements. Same process as before.
