  • I bring a sandwich and a bottle of water that I refill thru the day. The only time I've eaten on the OM was during the initial 2 weeks of of ICT

I had a firm offer in writing and 3 days later was contacted and myself and 2 other folks that were suppose to start were told "Your still hired BUT" they had to (or wanted to) bring in 5 hires from El Paso TX as part of their spanish emmersion class. We were suppose to hire in NOV and got pushed back til April.

They did away with that program but my point is it is the Government and anything can happen until you are in your first day of IF.

So whatever happened? Are you still waiting? Same thing happened to me but I wasn't given anymore info, they just said they were waiting for a budget to b passed n I haven't heard anything yet!!

I believe so but do not quote me. I know several folks that were SORT trainers with me belong to NTOA. As far as point, just for your personal satisfaction, no one in BOP cares and it is worth nothing at this time other than you getting contacts for down the road for any endeavers.

3 months out of IF and I realized that 50% of all that information they throw at you goes out the window. With the way things work in the actual units/yard and how senior officers go about getting day to day operations done is very different, at least at my USP. Also, you'll learn a lot of small details that aren't even mentioned in IF but are very important. I mean this in a good way though, and I literally learn something new every day about how to handle inmates and other staff.

I know it's been said 100's of times on this forum, but the best thing you can do is actually listen to senior staff, even if you don't agree with what they say or how they do things, just listen instead of dismissing what they say. Two guys from my class came in saying "I know all this or that" and now they are on the outside and on the lieutenant's radar with no one wanting to work with or help them. Kind of ****ty but that's what happens when you're not willing to listen to staff who have been doing this for 10+ years. Good luck man and hopefully you get at least some OJT days

USP's are a different animal. In IF as well as more so GLYNCO give only the most basic (and then in a perfect low FCI K and of world). There isn't the time to break down every little thing and you will come across those little things once in a while that was never thought of by you or policy so you might just have to wing it the best you can.

And the ones that think they know it all usually get ran out by the GS 8's or cry the first time they see what really happens in USP's. People will only help those types if they call for assistance. If they are asking they are usually told they can figure it out since if they truly know it all.

                    • This man speaks the truth. I have a good rep with almost everyone because I NEVER dismiss what the old hacks say and follow their instructions. Some of the other new people not so much....

                        • How difficult is it to land a "recreational specialist" position and is it an automatic promotion to a gl-9? Does this mean your OT is pretty much limited if one were to gain this position? Thanks.

Not great as an entry level position unless you know someone. Decent possibility to obtain as a merit promotion if you have the right credentials and have kissed the correct rings.

It all depends. While there are always some politics with anything it can depend on that, the applicants background etc. With the exception of an activating institution they normally hire from BOP staff in house.

As far as O/T that depends on local agreement. At mine all custody gets first chance at OT by seniority, at others it is by seniority with everyone no matter department.

Rec specialist don't normally get OT for their rec job. Very rarely will that happen

Thanks. Now I understand why gs-8s are generally the biggest money makers overall.
