Im a rookie and I caught myself complaining about how the post orders are written - very vague and non descriptive. Needless to say I got put in my place real quick. Looking back, I should have never said anything. Keep your mouth shut and ears and eyes open!!
This is because a lot of Rookies (not all but a lot) come in and notice the same thing us that have been here forever realize that something messed up. the Rookie comes across like they are onto something, ahead of the power curve and going to change it for the better, the problem is that suggestion/idea the Rookie has was suggested by some staff 10 years ago and we were told to "shut up and go color". Most of us don't like a lit of the bureacracy we see and the antiqated things that go on from tme to time eother but we just know or have learned how it is. I hate to admit it but when we see a hard charger take a lump when they walk into what I mentioned, and that disbelief sets in can make a fellow giggle (especially when we tried to mentor them and they don't take our word for it)

    • I'm looking for some advice. Last year around June 2014 I applied and heard nothing. I believe my application expired and I want to reapply but I'm wondering if I even have a shot at getting a interview.

Lets start off by saying I'm 27, no criminal record, no military experience. I'm one semester away from two degrees (I have over 120 units) and I'm a criminal justice major. I haven't stepped into the field yet as I've been at the same company for the past 5 years. (I've been promoted a few times and hold a comfortable position in which I was able to support myself through school and buy a house when I was 23). I lack the experience but I have the education and want to get my foot in the door. Is there a possibility I'd be contacted for either of these two facilities?

BOP hires a lot of pwople that are not Vets contrary to popular myths. The no experience can be a factor however if you have a degree that can negate the experience. You need to apply but you might not get to be as choosy where you want to go. My advice is put in for any number of FCC's that do a lot of hiring, even if it isn't where you want to be get in where you can, do your year then lateral closer to home etc. The ones hiring the most are Florence, Hazelton, Victorville, Coleman/ Yazoo City is getting ready to activate but i would recommend against Yazoo and thats all I will say here. Beaumont, Pollock and Terre Haute do quite a bit but a little more sporadic than the others mentioned.

If you want a stand alone FCI the 2 best bets right now would be Berlin and Mendota in California. Any other FCI's or stand alones you will have an uphill fight being there will be a lot more applicants than positions.

        Good luck

Keep applying. It took me 2 times applying before I got hired. Also if you don't get rated best qualified for both grades at the end of the application online you will not even get referred. Try applying to a usp of fcc to get hired quicker. I was holding out for an fci with 950 inmates but it worked out. I'm not a vet either but prior federal employee

Not that it'll mean anything, but I applied couple months back and heard nothing. My application went to "reviewed" and nothing else. I just reapplied to the newer posting and got "Reviewed". I dont have ANYTHING close to you in experience or education (especially), so not much of a surprise.

Also, can anyone else get onto prisonofficer.org? My firefox says it was reported as phishing website.

what if the facility you put in for within the FCC was the low?....do you stay at the low?
you will be bounced around quite a bit the first year until you can bid on a quarterly post...this is with a complex roster before a complex roster you stayed wherever you were first assigned...fyi my duty station currently is beaumont fcc

                • The "quickest" way to get hired is to:

                  A. Get BQ
                  B. Apply to the prisons that hire often

Resign yourself to the fact that you're probably going to have to relocate to a new state and work in an undesirable prison for at least a year. Don't worry about not being a vet or not having the education. Emphasize any supervisory/conflict resolution experience you have.

When you get an email about openings in a certain prison, send out a friendly email to the HR Specialist. I learned that if you DON'T hear back, you don't have a chance. If you're holding out for the minimum security prison down the street to hire, you could be waiting a long time.

I heard nothing back, didn't even get referred for a year or more. I followed the advice of the experienced posters on these boards and I've been having much better luck recently.

                  • Prisonofficer.org is a great site. I suspect the site owner/administrator has not made payment to the host. The guy that keeps the site going, to my best knowledge, is a Fed. C. O. and does a lot out of his own pocket. The site also accepts donations. The site has been down before, and after a few days gets back up.

It is hard to make ends meet on C.O. Pay in certain areas, and this pay period falls after a big holiday weekend. Many are financially stretched at this moment, or may be on vacation. I hope the site gets back up. Don't be afraid to give $5, it adds up.

Mine took about 4.5 hours total and that was with 2 other candidates. They call the entire process the "Core Value Assessment". It was very straightforward though and the scenarios they present you with aren't trying to trick you. Just use logical reasoning and remember, reporting to the supervisor is usually the #1 answer. I'm not sure how much detail I can say about the multiple choice computer test you do in the beginning, but it just presents you with situations a CO might find themselves in and how you would act. When I passed I met with the HR person and we went over my background and she had me fill out a simple questionnaire about criminal history etc. Other than that, it's the incident report video and finally the panel review. Good luck!

                            • So I was waiting until after a scheduled deployment in dec to move to Cali but I'm no longer deploying so now I've changed my locations to 1. Victorville and 2. Brooklyn mdc

I know Victorville is supposed to be always hiring. Anyone have any info on the next time they're pulling a list?

                              • Oh and if anyone is currently working in Victorville, can you chime in on places to live? Id like to be as close to LA as possible, maybe somewhere in between. Is it survivable on a gl-5 salary?
