  • Well I am ****ed.>rant<

Ok, so first off, I have been in corrections a lil over a year and a half. LE for 3 years. Perhaps its still my rookie-ness but WTF!!!!!!!!! Lets use the new year as the starting point. I cannot understand what can drive an officer to flush his career. Had one under investigation for being compromised. He resigned after he found out, tossing away nearly 10 yrs of time in. I know of other CO's under investigation as well, and to top things off, tuesday night, an officer in one of our neighboring yards was arrested by the local SO I was a PO with. His story, armed robbery, eluding, attempted murder of a PO. He tried to hit a friend of mine, and he must've had god with him cause if the two rounds put through his windshield werent stopped by the dash, they both would have been fatal. His excuse....alimony. Then (this is a good one) yesterday, our LT tells me we have yet another oficer vacancy open, as one of our officer just got nailed for DUI. WTF!!!!!!This one had 18 yrs in. I work at a camp, we have a staff of 11 including our LT. One transferred to the yard cause she wasnt working out to good, another resigned while I was on FMLA, and now the retard with the DUI. The state has suspended any and all OT, we are so understaffed, pay grades frozen, no other agency is hiring here. So now we got 2 cops per shift, two academy's going back to back, but none are assigned to us. Just larger yards. Ok, rant off for now.

    Welcome to Corrections

    Edit:

I know that's a crappy response...................but you are experiencing nothing new. My facility walks out about 1 per year for improper relationships with inmates. . . . . . . .and maybe 1 every year or so for some other type of misconduct.

That is an average over 30 years so some years have been worse, some better---------------------it looks like either you are having a bad year or your stats are worse than mine(smile)

    again

    Welcome to corrections

That sounds about right, unfortunately I've always been of the opinion that the state would save money in the long run, by increasing the hiring standards and pay (just a little) to avoid hiring people who have a penchant for commiting criminal acts.

It must be the same all over. I'm almost six years in and in the last year and a half alone, I've seen five people walked out over various things. It's one of those sad facts of corrections.

Watch the inmates and watch for dirty staff. Before long you'll be able to look at a new CO and guess about how long he'll last. It's a pleasant surprise when you're wrong.

Sorry to hear of your tale of woe, it's the same all over.
Now get out there and protect and serve

        .
I strongly feel that Correctional Officers should be hired at Police Officer standards. That would also strengthen the case for granting peace officer status and increasing training standards to make us on a par with our brothers in blue and tan.

However as seen on the nightly news-------------pretty much nightly, many police officers are also being caught in misconduct. Percentage wise there are probably as many cops "escorted out" as Correctional officers.

Just an observation, and not backed by statistics.

when i was IA i walked out about 5 people in under a year. it was once a month there for a couple months for just improper relationships, not the other stuff like bringing in dope. one officer bringing in tobacco, and i don't know how many female aramark food service workers. it was ridiculous.

As I've only been in for a little over a year, I've heard many an experienced officer tell me that one of three things can happen...

            1) You get used to the lifestyle behind bars and even comfortable with it.
            2) Inmates manipulate you
            3) You think that due to your stars, you can't be arrested or are above the law.

I pray I never meet someone and have to see it happen to them. That's for damn sure.

It's just people! They don't seem to realize that an inmate spends 24-7 thinking up ways to manipulate and **** with the system! In my 25+ years, I have found inmates that were soooo good at manipulating staff, that they became "repeat offenders" and did it more than once, to more than one officer. I guess some folks just are easy marks, and will fall for anything an inmate tells them.
