When I hit my ETS, I left with my DD 214. You should have got that before you got out. Did they give you a reason for not having your DD 214 during your final out processing? What did they tell you about your DD 214?

I was told when I ETS'd that I would be receiving my DD214 in the mail. I never did. However, they still gave me a copy of it before I left. If you need one, use this address to request one: http://www.archives.gov/veterans/evetrecs/index.html

It is difficult to get a copy of the member copy 4. That is the one with your RE code, type of discharge etc. Member copy 1 is the page that has the original signature on it. You will need both 1 and 4 if you are going to register it. I highly suggest that everyone goes to their local court house, city hall or some place like that and register their DD 214. That way if you ever lose your original copy, the registered copy will take its place.

I agree with registering your DD214 at the courthouse. Here's the only problem with that. The DD214 obviously has your SSN and DOB on it. Well, once it's registered in the courthouse, IT'S PUBLIC RECORD and anyone, yes anyone, can go in and request a copy of it.

I'm assuming you took some terminal leave. What should happen is on your actual ETS date, they should send you your DD214, like you stated.

I know it sounds obvious, but did you provide your separations specialist with the correct forwarding address to send your paperwork?

Have you called the person/office handling your separation?

I'm on terminal leave now and my wife ETS'd in July. Her DD214 was sent in the mail the day of her ETS.

If you haven't already, call your separations specialist; they should be able to clear it up for you.

If you follow the link I placed in my last post, you'll receive your 214 in the mail in about 3-5 days...

I would call the transition office at the Base that you ETSed from. When I got out, I walked out the door of the transition office for the last time with my original DD214 in my hand. That was at FT. Lewis last year.
