  • DoN Police Hiring ?

I just applied online through USAjobs for a position with the DoN as a police officer. My question is how does the process work for a Federal position like this? Another question I have is there anyone with the DoN that could give me some insight on how they like working for the DoN.

You have to apply through the navy's civilian human resources website (https://www.donhr.navy.mil) in order to get consideration.

Working conditions depend upon the base you are hired at. Some are decent but most generally stink. Id suggest doing a search for threads such as "DoD police" or "DoN police" etc.

Yeah...I work for the DON as well; I am at Kings Bay Naval Base in Southeast Georgia. What is it you want to know the academy is not accredited even thought the SouthEast Region academy is held here. Do we have activity here yes, we rotate every 3 months and the hours we work are great we work 4 off 3, work 3 off 2 that kind of schedule. To start out is not bad; However, if you had to start out in FLE start with Department of Veterans Administration their academy is better and Accredited you have arrest powers that come from the U.S.Marshals even though your jurisdiction may not go past a couple of blocks, and I think you work more with the local agencies. With DON our jurisdiction and power comes from the Base Commander on DVA your powers come from the head Adminisrator of the Bldg which in many aspects could be a real A-- or d---

The VA police DO NOT get their arrest authority from the US Marshal's. They are not even allowed deputation. They get their authority from Title 38 Sections 901-thru 904 of the US Code. What building administrator can give the VA police problems? Do you mean the medical center director? Yes he can but in many cases, they are supportive of the police force. Little Rock is not an accredited police academy in the respects and lines of FLETC. It does train all VA Police and some other federal agencies however in many respects, it does not hit on the foundation taught in many basic police academies.

I have applied for a ton of those jobs, through the DONHR system, over the last year or two. I know loads of others who have, too (some are even former USN MA's) None have ever heard a damn thing! Seems virtually impossible to get one of these positions, unless you know somebody on the "inside". I don't know why they are so hard to get? It's not like it's renowned to be the best Federal L.E. job, or anything.... (other posters words, not mine) They just strike me as the type of vacancies that they "have to advertise" if you know what I mean? Even though they've already got one of their buddies lined up for the job. Mind you, that could pretty much go for 99.9 % of every job ever advertised on USA Jobs.com... already a "done deal" for somebodys buddy / cousin / brother, etc. Nope, I don't want to p*ss on your camp fire my friend, but I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you. Good luck, anyway.

It depends upon the geographical location that you are putting in for. Also the system reads key words so you may need to rewrite your resume so the key words get hit.

                  Seems like a strange "system" if it can't even pick up on key words like;

                  25 years Law Enforcement experience,
                  International Police Advisor,
                  Rank of Captain,
                  G.S.-11

                  or even

                  Degree in Criminal Investigations,
                  Diploma in Security Management,
                  Certificate in Counter -Terrorism.

                  Perhaps I should rewrite my Resume to include a few new key words like;

                  Spotty-faced teenager,
                  Recently left school,
                  NIL experience,

                  or perhaps

                  Brother-in-Law,
                  Best friend,
                  Cousin,

Yep, I reckon that just might do the job?

Hey guys, I'm sorry but I've just got to share a funny little story with you...

Recently, I actually managed to obtain the telephone number of one of these so called "recruiting" sergeants. Yep that's right! An actual direct line number.
It was for an advertised DoD Police Officer position at one of my local bases.

Anyway, I gave him a call (just for a laugh) and offered to e-mail my Resume directly to him.

Well you should have heard the sheer panic in the poor guys voice. He sounded like he was gonna fill his pants, right there and then. Imagine that? Having to actually speak to a real live applicant - one that is fairly well qualified at that.

After about 5 minutes of "Um", "Ah", "Urgh" he just didn't know what to do, so he actually put his Lieutenant on the telephone to speak to me further.

Needless to say, I got the standard "Ah yes sir, you'll have to submit your application on-line, through the normal channels" blurb from him. This was in the usual (you've all heard it) extremely well rehersed mono-tone voice.

I felt like saying "Oh, of course. How silly of me. Yes, the normal channels...

That would be the great big 'BLACK HOLE' called USA jobs / DONHR (it's all the same) that hundreds of thousands of well qualified applicants fruitlessly submit their Resumes into every year, never to be seen or heard of again.

... or shall I just feed my Resume through the shredder now, Sir?"

As you've probably gathered, I don't have a whole lot of faith in "the system".

also know Veterans have preference for these jobs.

Was that "Veterans" or "Veterans with Connections" because the 2 are very different?

In my last agency, at least 3/4 of the officers were veterans. In fact, most of those were former / retired USN or USMC including many who had related LE / MP / MA experience in the service.

Not a SINGLE ONE ever got so much as even an interview for any of those "vacancies" posted on either USA jobs or DONHR web sites.

It used to be a standing joke...

Someone would say: "Hey, you could always apply for one of those jobs on (the above mentioned) web sites" then everyone would roar with laughter.

Then somebody would chip in with: "Nah, I'll run for the White House instead. I've got a better chance of getting the President's job".

I'd say "veterans" and "veterans with connections" could come hand in hand. You make those connections while you're in.

But obviously they have to be the right "connections" don't they? The kind of connections like drinking beer with one of these "recruiters" at his family BBQ or dating his sister, etc, etc.
