  • What to expect at FLETC UPTP with the Navy?

Just took a job offer with the Navy as an 0083. This puts me right back to my home state so I’m pretty excited despite the stories I’ve hear about the Navy. I was wondering if I could get any insight on the curriculum with UPTP under the Navy. How many exams there are, what classroom instruction looks like, etc. Also, is there anything online I could look into to pre-study?

This is my first academy so I just want to be as prepared as possible. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

UPTP is easy. You will be put into a class of other uniformed agencies. 4 exams and lots of practical exercises you have to pass. However....if thousands of other students have passed then you will be fine. However, Id bounce as soon as you get experience at that agency and go onto greener pastures.

Haha I’ve been told that last part a lot so we’ll see how my first year goes. Can’t be as bad as my current position. Thanks for the info!

UPTP is a general course so it’s not going to have anything specific to Navy. You’ll probably be in a class with people from several agencies. Just spend time studying the material every day and you’ll be fine.

Ahh okay, that makes sense. Right now I’m going over case law and FLETC flash cards with several topics I found on quizlet. Is there anything you would recommend pre-academy or is it more like an “into the frying pan” type of deal?

3inchkilla, what you’re doing is probably fine. They give you everything you need to know. There isn’t any surprises.

If I may add my 2 cents: Navy UPTP has relatively lax PT standards which require you to "Participate" in the Bench, Illinois agility test, sit/reach, and 1.5 mile. As long as there's improvement between the initial and the final PEB, you are good. Other agencies such as Capital, CIA SPS, and USSS uniform Div are required to do extra PT after hours from what i saw. That being said, your ORT/PT experience will depend heavily on who your primary instructor is. My first go-around, the instructor just wanted to make everyone suffer for his own amusement (he no longer teaches there). Second time, my instructor was ACES, we got an excellent workout, learned the techniques and it was usually enjoyable.

Thank you for the info! I don’t think I’ll have too much issue with the PEB/PT standards but I appreciate the confirmation about the rumors I had heard about it haha.

Just started my position as an 0083 with the Navy but haven’t gone to FLETC yet actually. ETA on starting UPTP is around August. Everyone’s been telling me there’s no way I’ll fail haha. Regardless, currently studying up on 4th amendment and various terms I’m unfamiliar with. Will update everyone when I’ve gone for sure!

3inch - I’m a 0083 with a Fed civilian agency, just throwing in my two cents - highly recommend holding off on studying the 4th Amendment until you’re there learning it in the context that they teach it to avoid confusion, as it can get complex with a lot of information to dissect. They take a vast law and break it down perfectly to what you need for the exams and the job. You’ll get 12 two-hour classroom sessions on it during UPTP and also apply 4A principles in practical scenarios before the exam. I got there knowing pretty much nothing about it and the exam with all 4A questions was my highest exam score and the same went for most of my class. Got the same advice from an Army buddy of mine now with USSS UD and it seemed to help. Good luck!

Thats good, what are they having you do for the next 6 months? I see now where the Navy is hiring Police anywhere from GS-5-7 depending on their quals and even a 20k hiring bonus. Id be curious to hear who is getting the extra 20k. Good luck

Could you please share where you are seeing that they are giving a 20k bonus?

For all of us new guys, we had to go through their little Guard training course and then they posted us up at their main gates. My specific job didn’t come with a bonus attached to it but they paid for my relocation and they paid more than what I asked for which really shocked me. My last to Army bases were definitively not as generous.

I, however, would advise anyone looking to become an 0083 with Navy to just be cognizant of the obvious. There’s going to be an agreement attached to any bonuses or relocation.
