Hey can anyone tell me about joining the coast guard...life in the coast guard.Basically stuff that isnt on their website.

How are the living arrangements?As far as how long are you stationed where you go? Or what are the odds of me getting stationed close to home(San Diego)

Whats the best rating to get LE experience(I hear they all basically do)...BM?

What are the duties of a BM?

How easy/hard is it to get a degree in the CG?

Anything else ill need to know before joining?

where to start....
Ive been in for 3.5 years and im an MK 2.
Im not going to bad-talk a recruiter but...sometimes you get a good one and sometimes you get a bad one...and its nearly impossible to tell the difference until you get in and find out for yourself if he/she lied about a thing or two.

The Coast Guard is a great service in itself but like any other job, its only as good as what you make it. If you want to get into Coast Guard law enforcement, depending where you are at, a lot of different rates can do it. for underway law enforcement missions...such as stations AND cutters, two roles are played. a boarding officer and a Boarding team member. That is the minimum. there can be more depending on the size of the vessel/ people on board you are boarding. to be a BTM, it is a qualification that you will have to aquire. If you cook for the guard, take some time and get your sign offs doen and you can do L.E. The majority of L.E. coasties are BM's and MK's. There is a new rate starting up this month called M.E. (maritime enforcement) its brand new so I would recomend waiting to dip your toes in that one right off the bat.

living quarters can sometimes be GREAT and other times be extreamly cramped. the newer cutters are great for burthing. A tour at a station lasts 4 years. if you advance or go to a "a" school then you can transfer.

as far as staying in your home area..I used to think the same way but hey its the military..why not see the US on the governments dime and check things out. when in bootcamp, you make up a dream sheet...and thats exactly what it is.. a dream. 95% of the time your not going to recieve what you want unless its somewhere noone wants to be in the entire coast guard...such as Maine...no offense to any Mainers.
