  • A few MPD Q's

    1) Is there a set time of the day that PT is done in the Academy, if so when do they usually PT?

    2) I am getting ready to purchase a new Glock for off-duty carry (as I sold most of my compact guns over the past few months). Am I restricted to carrying a 9mm off-duty in DC or can I carry what I want?

    3) Is there any possibility that MPD will be switching to .40cals? - I like bigger holes (in this respect ).

    4) Where the hell am I going to put my AK-47's, Thousands of rounds of Ammo and other Guns when I move to DC?!?! Hahaha, Nah - I already have that under control, they will be secured at my fathers house At least he will be able to hold his fort when SHTF.

All day unless you have academic courses scheduled. And especially when someone in your class does something wrong.

Dept policy- You can only carry on or off duty firearms designated. Glock 17, 19 and 26. All 9mm. And those grandfathered to carry the .38's.

"Suppose" to be in talks although I "think" our ERT carries the .40 cal Glock.

As a LEO, you should be able to keep all that stuff with you if you live in the City.....

          Perhaps CityCop can chime in.....

Thanks guys. I wanted to know if there was a specific PT time so I could switch my running workouts to the same time of day that they run in the Academy. I wanted to know what the deal with the off-duty carry options were so I could place an order for either a G19 or G23 - CityCop def squared me away on that one, looks like I'm ordering the 19.

I asked Q # 4 as I am semi-familiar with the gun laws in DC and figured I would not be able to bring any Assault Weapons or Unauthorized Ammo into the City. I'll research this extensively before bringing them with me to DC.

Once again, I think LE is exempt from that.....as if that was the case, there wouldn't be a single Federal LEO/MPD Officer living there....as the ones that I know live there all have personal weapons.........

Why buy a G19 on your own when chances are good you'll be issued one?

You are correct Bearcat. Another officer a few months ago had a similar question. Talked to one of our firearms examination guys and he stated as long as he was le that was covered by 218 he was A ok.

I guess I'll just wait and see what they issue me. I would prefer the full size G17 for on-duty use. I also like to keep my duty gun at work, in its holster and in my locker. I know a few guys who only have one handgun which they bring back and forth to work - Not a good habit to get into.

Like MPDJock said....you may be issued a G-19 (if not the G-17), I would pick up a G-26 to carry off duty......

Just my opinion....I wouldn't leave my duty weapon in my locker. Not that you can't trust the other cops but you have a lot of civilians walking around too, like the cleaning people. Why take the chance............

I have always kept my duty gun in my locker. I would feel more comfortable reporting my gun was stolen out of my work locker (unless there is an SOP against leaving your duty gun in the locker) than reporting it stolen from my car, house, etc. Plus I would never want to forget it or be somewhere without it (very rare) and have to go directly to work.

I'm sure someone has broken into a police locker but they must have some serious balls to do same at MPD. From what I have seen in 1,3,5 and 7d there seemed to be a fair amount of traffic (officers) going in and out of the locker rooms.

If its stolen out of the locker it almost looks worst for the Dept. as there was a breach in the security of the dept whereas if it gets stolen out of my house or car I feel I would be held more accountable. Just my .02

In any event I can't wait to hit the streets!

Still dont understand your train of thought. 99% of guys I know, including myself, take their duty weapon home with them and do NOT leave it in their locker.

It's really just personal preference. Oddly enough, the mass majority of the Officers around do not take their duty guns home. Most of us come to work w/our compact/sub-compact guns and leave our full sized duty-guns at work instead of carrying two pistol's home.

The few that take their guns home (2 I know of) leave in uniform bottoms w/gun exposed. Again it's all in the eyes of the beholder (to each his own) I just prefer leaving mine at work. Someone can post this topic in the firearms or duty gear section if he/she is truly looking for more opinions on this matter. My bad for advising of said opinion here.

For the record my train of thought in relation to this matter is formulated based on what is listed in post # 12, this post (don't carry two handguns on my person when off duty), even though checks are done I like knowing that my duty gun is always in same condition and lastly I like knowing my duty-gun is always at work incase I'm going straight to work from a location where I was not able to carry a gun (airplane, pool party, porno shoot, etc.)

Oh yeah, not packing my duty-gun while off duty also gives me a reason to buy more guns, forgot that one
