    Ad Statement:

    Founded in 1821, GW is the largest institution of higher education in the District of Columbia, to include ten academic units, with a full-time equivalent enrollment of a little over 20,000 students and approximately 11,000 full-time and part-time employees (faculty and staff).     Job Description Summary:

    Reporting to the Senior Associate Vice President for Safety and Security, the Chief for the George Washington University Police Department provides leadership and direction for GWPD a 100 person, unarmed, police force that provides security and crime prevention services to the university. She/he serves as the public face of GWPD internally and externally and provides day-to-day, strategic management and oversight of the University’s security programs. The Chief establishes and communicates a departmental vision and provides strong, energetic leadership and direction to GWPD staff in the implementation of that vision. Nurturing a strong sense of teamwork, the Chief is expected to attract and retain a workforce that reflects the diversity of the University and the Washington area community while creating and maintaining an environment that promotes a workplace climate based on respect, trust and where individuals feel comfortable reporting incidents of discrimination or harassment.


    Minimum Qualifications:

    A Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience is necessary.

    Minimum of ten years of law enforcement experience, to include at least seven years of administrative supervision, assessment of training needs, staffing and analyzing the effectiveness of policies, procedures, and operations within a law enforcement agency is required.

    Possession of a District of Columbia Special Police Commission or the ability to obtain a DC commission within 120 days of employment is required.

    Successful completion of a physical, drug screen and mental examination, which has been approved by the GW Police Department, is required.

    Minimum of 800 hours of formal and in-service law enforcement services training, to include certification in Emergency First Aid and CPR is necessary.

    Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.

    Proficient knowledge and understanding of current electronic security equipment, such as CCTV, is necessary.

    Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with the media in written responses to questions, through face-to-face print and electronic interviews; and social media.

    Job Duties



    Function:

    Oversees departmental management activities such as recruitment and hiring, performance reviews, training, professional development, promotions, transfers, and scheduling of professional and support staff.



    Function:

    Participates in the collective bargaining process as a member of the University team, as well as working with the union on a day-to-day basis. Hears all union grievances, determines appropriate action, and represents the department in the arbitration process.



    Function:

    Ensures that professional discipline and adherence to appropriate departmental and University policies and procedures are maintained. Oversees the investigation of complaints against the department and recommends appropriate action and ensures that all incidents and arrest activities are properly documented, including reviewing written reports, communicating with staff, and completing administrative follow up as needed.



    Function:

    Develops, allocates, and oversees an annual operating budget consistent with applicable policies, procedures and regulations. Presents budget estimates and control expenditures of departmental appropriations.



    Function:

    Works closely with other Office of Safety and Security units, the Office of Emergency Management, and the Office of Health and Safety. Works collaboratively with other University departments to maintain safety and security at university events during emergency situations, and on a day-to-day basis.



    Function:

    Collaborates with the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office and other local and federal law enforcement agencies as appropriate.



    Function:

    Performs other work-related duties as requested.
