  • DC Special Police Training

I wondering about the DC Special Police Officer program, what is the order that somebody would have to go in. Do they get hired first, or go through one of those 40 hour classes first?

Also, does anyone know which one of the special police training courses is the best? or if there is ones that have better reputations than others?

Have to get hired first.....then the company that hires you does the training....

That's what I thought. So are places like this running a scam? http://www.eliteipatraining.com/DC%20SPO/dc_spo.html

Or can you take the training anytime and are just not certified until you are hired?

This is a police forum...... "special police" in DC is really just what is referred to as "armed security guard" elsewhere in the country, so we won't know all the finite details.

As of January 1, 2014; DCRA (DC Dept of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs) took over regulating and licensing special police and security officers from MPD SOMB (MPD Security Officers Management Branch) as a result of legislation passed in the Omnibus Budget Act of 2014. As a result, some of the longstanding policies and procedures are in flux and/or are being totally re-written for the commercial security industry.

I have noticed recently more and more private security companies offering "special police officer training" AND further offering to "sponsor" candidates for their SPO license. Basically, this means, the company is "hiring you" however they are charging you a fee for the training (say $475) and they will call you their employee so that you can obtain a SPO license (although you may never actually work as a SPO for them). After 90 days of that SPO license being issued, you can transfer it to a regular security company and work as a SPO.

The companies that do this are skirting the regulations; but a quick glance as the Security Jobs Section of DC Craigslist will show that is what seems to be the norm right now.

That's a huge scam. If you read through the fine print, they have separate certs for other stuff..... aka taking more of your money and still not guaranteeing you a job.

          Screw that......

If you are wanting a security gig in DC, get with G4S (use to be Wackenhut) and apply with them. They will hire, train, certify, and put you on one of their locations.

They are ALWAYS hiring. The contract at the Main Justice Building starts around 30 bucks an hour......and with OT you can pull in some huge bank if you can deal with the BS there....

            Thanks.

I looked into that but I don't think I would be able to do it, because I haven't attended an academy. Which is part of the overall problem, but that is for a different thread
