Ok, Squirrel, that makes more sense and I retract my earlier statement that our experiences were so different. I'm in the same boat now, having left the NPS in the last few years for greener pastures. I echo the sentiment that I thoroughly miss the job, but not the NPS.
I'd still like to know what park had you working in an information desk in duty gear, so I can call in a predator drone strike on that superintendent's office. Why am I thinking a certain small park in Atlanta?
I do see pro-LE people moving into management positions by small increments, but the problem is the best LE Rangers all get poached by the Forest Service, BLM, Fish & Wildlife...hell, even agencies outside land management policing (like me) before they get to that point!
Wasn't in Atlanta. It was actually out in the IMR. Don't worry, the superintendent has since left, although I don't know if resources are still being misspent there. Either way, not my problem at this point.Comment

What info are you looking to get? I went to LMPT in NM, but the basic program is the same as what you will do in GA.Comment
-
Is everything covered in the LMPT course or will I need to do a basic course and then LMPT? Is LMPT held in NM still or GA? What's the NM facility like? Just thing's like that. Any info would be appreciated!

Otherwise, LMPT is just like your basic police academy (although I think less stressful) but has some added "rangerly" stuff like tactical tracking, etc.Better to live one day as a lion, than a hundred years as a sheep.Comment

If you're just looking to get your foot in the door, do yourself a favor and apply to Philly or the Arch.Better to live one day as a lion, than a hundred years as a sheep.Comment

I'm curious about this concept of exempting LMPT. Does anyone have any more info to offer on this?
Being a special agent, isn't as special as one may think...Comment

I know they have done it for FLETC Uniform Police Training or whatever they are calling it this week. Not sure about basic 1811 school.Better to live one day as a lion, than a hundred years as a sheep.Comment

I have seen this particular position in Hawaii come open about every year or so advertising multiple vacancies. That should tell you something. But, like anything, it depends on what you want to do. Boredom, isolation, and leprocy...yeah, dosen't sound like a great place to work for me, but I'm sure there are people out there who enjoy getting paid a decent salary to be left alone and not really do any work. Not worth it for me though.Better to live one day as a lion, than a hundred years as a sheep.Comment

Just returned from Yosemite last night and was surprised to find that out of four days there, I only saw two LE rangers the whole time.Comment

The island is miserable.....thru the roof unemployment rate because the only hotel they had there got shut down because the locals threw a fit about it wanting to expand. So, the owner just shut down...... Other than that, not much there on the top side. Bottom side where you would be working has nothing there at all....Nothing at all.....
I couldn't imagine dragging wife/kids there...... School system is barely existing there......
Unless you have some Hawaiian background....it would be a very, very rough place to live and work.....Comment

Do a decent amount of the LE Rangers ever buy a camper and just live in that? If someone is a LE Ranger is it practical to buy a camper to live in instead of the gov housing also since they move around alot and private housing isn't always available............Comment
