Carry Me Back to Old Virginny

Carry me back to old Virginny,
There's where the cotton and the corn and tatoes grow,
There's where the birds warble sweet in the springtime,
There's where the old darkey's heart am long'd to go,
There's where I labor'd so hard for old massa,
Day after day in the field of yellow corn,
No place on earth do I love more sincerely
Than old Virginny, the state where I was born.

          CHORUS:
Carry me back to old Virginny,
There's where the cotton and the corn and tatoes grow,
There's where the birds warble sweet in the springtime,
There's where this old darkey's heart am long'd to go.

Carry me back to old Virginny,
There let me live 'till I wither and decay,
Long by the old Dismal Swamp have I wander'd,
There's where this old darkey's life will pass away.
Massa and missis have long gone before me,
Soon we will meet on that bright and golden shore,
There we'll be happy and free from all sorrow,
There's where we'll meet and we'll never part no more.

          How bout that?

            Old Virginny

Wasn't that the state song at one time?

It sure ain't exactly politically correct, though.

Nice on Kaps. I was looking for some spirit in 2007, not 1807!!

I saw on Wikipedia (I know, not a relliable source) that it was the state's song until 1997. Doesn't exactly make our state look good.

Many would agree that the state should never have abandoned it.

Okay then. We have no song. Other useless trivia. Gotta love the state insect!

                      The Commonwealth

Here's to Virginia! I look back on it with longing, especially since I'm freezin' my ***** of here in Minneapolis.

1.5 years 'til I'm back, and I'm countin' the days...
Magistrate: "Do you have any other pending charges?"
Drunk: "Well there's this thing where the cops said I spit blood on them."
Me: "Wait a minute, that was me!"
Drunk: "Oh... now you like me even less."

Wh***up!!! I live on the east coast now and am looking to move towards the middle of the state to a more less populated area. I'm tired of all the nuts and traffic out here in Hampton Roads. Now that I'm off the job I will shortly have the freedom to escape this area. I won't miss being shot at anymore though....

It's completly politically incorrect, but it's refence to "darkey" and "massa" is perfectly appropriate for Virginia Racists like loser George Allen with his "macaca" remarks last year, and current Assemblyman Frank Hargrove, Sr. Let's face it, there are numerous "politically incorrect" (I call them wrong) things about Virginia which is why I moved away several years ago after being born and raised there. Think Lee highway is named after Bruce Lee? Ever wonder why Fairfax County Police Department officers wear grey shirts? You think that's "urban camo?" C'mon, get real, historically, think about what that symbolizes. That's just the way it is, and will be. It's a conservative state, with conservative people and an entrenched history of institutionalized racism. I could tick down a list of things in that regard. Some might love that though !

To be fair, there are many well mannered and decent people in Virginia though, decent...but boring. You may now sit in stop and go traffic from the Cabin John (American Legion) Bridge to the Phillip Morris factory in Richmond, but at least they haven't yet developed the beautiful mountain areas with endless tract housing.

                              retort

this probably isn't the appropriate forum for this discussion, afterall, this isn't police related one bit....but i feel i must respond.

i'm sorry you feel like that, but i couldn't disagree more.

as i see it, every department in virginia should wear blue and grey. and i see nothing wrong with naming streets after people who were raised in the Commonwealth.

and when was the last time you were in northern Virginia? its not really the old south that you hint at.

heritage is important, and that doesn't equate to racism.
