  • about Arlington

    Hello everyone,
My wife is trying to talk me into moving to the DFW area, by saying that there alot of jobs and that it is a good place to raise a family. I am in the process of transitioning out of the Army and I am at the point where I am going to begin applying for police jobs. My question is how is Arlington or the surrounding cities to raise a family and the overall quality of life such as activities and parks for the family, prices of houses and quality of good neighborhoods and things like that. I am going to check the area out for myslef but still I would like to know first hand from anyone who already lives in the area. Thanx

Arlington just like any other big city is going to have its rougher areas and it's nice areas. Me personally if you want to work in a big city, try to live in a small suburb that may have the better schools, lower crime etc.

Well, the DFW Metroplex is huge and areas vary widely. Up in Frisco the schools and area are excellent buy you'll pay a little more to live there. greatschools.net(I think that is the right address) will give you a break down on the school districts but everything else, you really need to come out here and experience. Cost of living is lower than NY but you'll make up for it with AC costs if you buy too big of a house.

I may be wrong, but I don't think you can use military to supplement the Bachelor's degree APD wants. If you want a higher quality of living look in Collin County (Plano PD would probably be a good fit for you)

I may be wrong, but I heard Arlington was real strict with having a degree..

Yet they pay similar to departments that don't require. And whats with their recruitment video being in spanish?

If I was going to work somewhere they required a degree I'd look at Plano. Good luck.

I may offend our Arlington brethern here, but I haven't really seen that many 'nice' neighboorhoods in Arlington. Please, feel free to point me in the right direction

Id stay out of Arlington. i live here and dont like it. i would also stay away from Arlington PD. BUT the DFW area is great and is a great place to live. it is very easy to find a job to be a cop here.

Why the caution about Arlington PD?

He has some big beef with APD, he detailed it in a post, but then was quickly pounced on, and he edited it out.

Some have had negative experiences with APD...including other officers.
