The big question I have here is the eye exam for medical part. I am pretty sure uncorrected my vision is worse than 20/100, I didn't realize that requirement was there until now. Do they really disqualify people for that? I have contacts that work for me great, I'd just hate to not be able to join because of my eyes, this is a life long goal of mine and have a BS in CrimJ. I do the medical testing next week and now I'm super nervous... thanks.
Nice, you're almost there. I'm sure you're fine

Hey dude, I heard from background investigator last week, he asked for some additional info and we talked for a while, mostly bc I asked a bunch of questions lol. He was cool about it. He told me it would take about 6 weeks for the BI, and then after that travel to Dallas to finish up everything else, basically he said the next academy is third week of February 18 and that he’s confident I would be done with the hiring process by then and EOD for that academy. Did you hear anything?

Hello! Started my background investigation around the last week of August, got the phone call around last Monday. Detective told me that he had concluded his BG and sent his findings up to his Sergeant. Still waiting for the phone call to see whether i passed. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Congrats on getting this far!! They tell u when the academy starts and ask if u can make it. I was given about 2 weeks. Some people ive heard get more time, and i have heard where its less time. I am also from out of state so i had nothing lined up in terms of having an apartment etc. If u cant make it that date, they tell u the next date and make u a prehire which means u work at headquarters until the next academy date. But that doesnt mean its 1-2 minths but they arent sure when the next academy will really be. But if u r moved down here to work at HQ as a prehire u might as well just start the academy. The medical is just a drug test and a simple eye exam where u read the letters off the chart by covering one eye and then the other...just like any eye exam. Did u tell anyone ur eye sight was bad? I believe the requirements r corrected to 20/20. They never ask what uncorrected is. I wear contacts which corrects my vision and did not run into a problem. Any other questions just PM me. Hope i answered all of em so far.

No I didnt mention my eyesight I really didn't even think if it, I figured it was like military where they just make sure it's correctable. So they didn't check you without your contacts? I'm not worried about the rest of medical, just nervous about that part but it sounds like you didn't have any issues so that gives me hope. Yeah I'm not from Dallas either so I'd have to move down for the academy. How's the psychological part? If you're allowed to discuss it, seems like it's a few tests and talk with someone. Thanks again! Hope academy is going well for you!

Message me if you'd like...I can help u find apartments since I had about a week to find housing. And to change your license and car info over.

        • I received my email in late August that they were starting my background and I still haven't heard anything yet. Do they tell you when your background has been submitted? Do they email you or mail you a letter if you've been rejected?

Your BI should be in contact you the whole time telling you when it starts and when it finishes.

Lol yea not mine. No communication at all. I've had to reach out to get any updates and even some of those have resulted in no responses. Anytime I've emailed them with info, I never got any confirmation. It's coming up on 3 months. None of my references have said they called them so either my BI is that far behind or they found something in my background right away that they didn't like but if so, why haven't I heard anything yet?

no clue. my BI had things done and i was hired in about 4-5 months. ive been told that if you contact them too much/often theyll stick your name at the bottom of their pile but no one knows if theres any truth to that. ive known some people in my class who took over a year to get hired and through background. my references werent called until i was ready to come back for the psych/medical which is the final step. i know what it feels like to be in limbo. it sucks. keep pushing fwd bro. worst case scenario re-apply? i dont know if thats an option or not.

They ended up emailing me back. Said they're still working on it. I guess everyone's timeline is different. Go figure...(sarcasm)

        • Finished testing in October and am now waiting for the BI to give me a call. How long did it take for you guys for the BI to contact you all?
I will be applying to the department, but I will be an out of state applicant. Any advice or insight to the application process? Academy?

Just an FYI to all that maybe applying to Dallas PD. This is no joke out here. You must work hard and test well. 36 weeks is 36 weeks of test after test. Miss to many and your going home. Failing to keep up with the physical aspects and you might quit or flunk out. 9 months is a long time and the process is forever going, you need to stay focused and know the material. I have seen college educated recruits fail out due to the testing. I have seen people quit because of the physical training that goes on here in this heat is real and tough. You will train in 100 degree temps and stay focused. If your planning on doing that you will be successful. Please!!! please!!! please!!! if you have ANY kind of misdemeanor or felony please dont waste a trip here or arrests, if you had been arrested they can also get you escorted out of the testing process. if you have an arrest and its been dismissed, make sure that you get court papers to prove it wrong or documents that would explain what happened. If you require any other info please feel free to ask. No such thing as a dumb question. If you read back a person I informed about these issues was escorted out. Please read all the posts.

Yeah, for me started in Aug finished in November. We need officers bad and we have the best training in the state, I'm in the freshman academy, while cpd2010 is in the senior one. BG called me around 2-3 weeks after I finished the oral board.

          • I am in the process of finishing the academy. I have two items left before I finish and graduate (Feb. 9th). When the academy is completed I have 18 weeks of FTO, with in service between every 6 weeks. Then its on to little T . All future prospects, PLEASE know that you will not be in the clear until these phases are complete. You can still fail out in these last two objectives (FTO training and Little T phases) which people have done. I know of two people that quit during the FTO training period so dont think your on easy street once you finish the academy. I was taught if someone is giving you FREE advice its best to listen, after all I have been through most of the process, and have friends that are almost finished with all phases. If you have any questions please feel free to email me on here and remember, if it worth doing give it 1000% of yourself. JUSTMY2¢

Avoid central patrol, northwest, north central.
You will not learn much at these divisions unless if you have a good FTO.

The hiring process is as follows, you come out for the testing, its done over 4 days, if your not DQ'ed in these first 4 days then the process continues. You go back home and wait until they call or email you for the last 2 steps, medical, finger prints and poly. Then your stuff goes to your BI. In about 4 weeks the BI will contact you and tell you he is starting your BG. Please please please fill out all the correct info on the first 4 days worth of paperwork. DON'T leave anything out including transcripts from every college you ever attended, it can DQ you. Once your BG is finished and they invite you to the academy, you can be a pre hire ( HIRED AND WAITING FOR AN ACADEMY DATE) or just get an academy date to start. I will say this, please be serious about this process. I have seen people come and go in the 7 1/2 months i have been here. These people are good at weeding out the weak. They will push you and push you hard. Nine months is a long time so be prepared to go the distance if your hired. Total hiring process time FOR ME!!!!!! was 4 months start to finish, for others it was longer.

              • This past week has been extremely hard. We have lost another great police officer this past week, and still have one in serious condition. Things went sideways very fast. I dont know all the details but whatever they were, had grave consequences. I tell everyone I come in contact with, when your on duty, KEEP YOUR HEAD IN THE GAME. This officer was 3 years in and the other officer about the same, yet all the training they received didn't do them a bit of good. Why? You always have to take every scenario like they teach us and think this can go bad. Three police officer and a lost prevention officer and ended with 3 shot, all critical. One now died, which leaves two still critical. People I have been out here for about 12 weeks and its bat **** crazy out here everyday. I couldn't be more proud of my DPD family, when the **** hit the fan they responded and in a HUGE way. Please if you want to serve, sign up and heed the call. We need more great men like Rogelio Santander #10934. Rest in peace brother we will hold the line from here.
