DALLAS - A gunman opened fire on a Dallas police officer Monday afternoon at an apartment complex in far north Dallas.
The shooting happened around 5:30 p.m. in the 3500 block of Timberglen Drive near the President George Bush Turnpike and Marsh Lane.
Police said the officer was in the area responding to a call about a man with a gun. He was looking for the man when bullets began flying through the windshield of his squad car.
One of the bullets bounced off the officer's microphone on his chest and then grazed his neck. He was taken to the hospital in good condition, police said.
The gunman was reportedly found dead nearby from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police said the officer never returned fire.

DALLAS –– When Dallas police arrived at the Timberglen apartments in North Dallas on Monday, officers had no idea it was a set-up.
"There's no question in our mind that his intent was to lure us there and ambush us," Chief David Brown told a news conference Wednesday.
Brown said the suspect placed a fake 911 call where his voice is heard on the tape saying: "There's a guy walking around my apartment in a gray hoodie, and he's walking around with a gun, and I think he might hurt somebody He has on khakis, and, uh, yes sir, I'm looking at him right now."
Suspect Bryson Howard used his aunt's cell phone to place the fake call, according to police, who are investigating whether Howard has mental problems.
Investigators said Howard was hiding and waiting for officers to arrive at the apartment complex.
Officer Ronald Workman, 66, was the first to arrive at the scene. Police said the suspect immediately fired two rounds, one of them hitting Workman's radio microphone attached to the lapel of his shirt.
The bullet ricocheted, piercing the officer's neck and lodging in his jaw.
"It's my opinion that it is the grace and mercy of the good Lord that we don't have an officer in worse shape," Chief Brown said, adding that police ambushes are a growing problem nationwide.
Brown said officers dying in the line of duty by gunfire has increased 29 percent over the past two years across the U.S. Officer Workman is expected to undergo surgery once the swelling subsides in his jaw, where the bullet is still lodged.
Another shooting that occurred off Lake June Road earlier on Monday also put Dallas officers in an ambush situation. Chief Brown said in that incident, a robbery suspect turned his gun on three officers as he was hiding behind a building.
None of the officers was hurt in that incident.

We had an OIS about 2-3 hours before where a robbery suspect ran then pulled a gun on the officers.

That makes 4 OIS in 2 months and this officer getting shot... and it's still "winter"

"You go for a man hard enough and fast enough, he don't have time to think about how many's with him; he thinks about himself, and how he might get clear of that wrath that's about to set down on him."
