    Hello,

I've applied with HPD close to two months ago and haven't heard anything back yet, not by mail or e-mail. What is their SOP in getting back to an applicant. Just wondering if I am forgeting to do something.
    Thanks,

    Thumper,
I am not an HPD recruiter so don't take this as gospel, but I have spoke to a few coming and going around the department. You probably have done everything right, but with only two classes for next year they now have more applicants per slot, so instead of completing paperwork and sending it on to fill the class they have a backlog of people for this upcoming and the next class. So in a sense they can be more picky, also alot of them have been moved around to fill other holes in the department and it plainly leaves the ones who are there swamped. If you feel you did something wrong call them and ask if there was something you left out or maybe forgot. I am not sure of the SOP they have for getting in contact with applicants. As I said a courtesy call would probably help to put you at ease, I don't recommend ringing the phone off the hook though. I hope this helps.

It took a little over two months before I heard anything. They are severely backed up. My recruiter says that her table is stacked full of applicants. Just hang in there. I sympathized with you. I have completed phase I and now just staring at the phone now waiting to hear when I take the poly. JK it feels like that everytime a unknown number rings on my cell! Good luck.

Be patient. As one previous poster put it, they have a huge stack of papers in front. It's going to be a while.

Tip o' the day: With the glut of applicants they are going through, HPD can afford to be picky. Don't be surprised if they bump you for something you think is minor. Appeal, appeal, appeal. That is what the appeals process is for.

Don't feel bad for the wait. I was in the process for 10 months. I just got bumped because of employment references. I appealed, but, apparently, there are better looking applicants out there. If you really want it, you'll get it.

I second on hearing that rumor of a classs in January. Spoke to my recruiter a few days ago and heard the same thing. I hope that it gets the green light. It would be good for everybody. Its not official but the recruiter would not mention it to just get us excited for nothing. Mine is very nice and proffessional, not that I expected anything different.

Hey guys - first post here.

I've been waiting for my call as well - the wait is driving me insane! Unfortunately, I only put my application in at the beginning of October so I fear that I have a looooong time to wait going by other people's posts.

I called last week and they said they had received the application - but it would take about 8 weeks to get called in for the initial interview.

I was really hoping to get into the March class - but it's looking more like the May class and I'm nervous even about that one.

The recruiter told me the same thing about the Jan class but said they are waiting on the new mayor before any decisions are made. If the March & May class are the only ones - not sure what I'm going to do. I really want to go HPD academy but don't want to wait a year to do so.

I wonder - do they wait until the last minute to choose applicants so they can pick the best ones or is it first come first serve? You would think they would wait and then choose the most promising 70-75 for each class.

we're in the middle of mayoral runoff election, if Gene Locke gets elected, we may get a big budget for more classes next year instead of just 2.

If Parker wins, most likely we'll see nothing for us.....

December 12 - everyone needs to get out & vote. If we get stuck with Parker, HPD & crime in Houston are going to suffer.

I'm hearing the opposite about Parker. Word in HPD has it that she may work to fund more classes, and try to get HPD to accept laterals from outside academies. Essentially, you'd go through UHD, Wharton or wherever and apply to HPD, then they will run you through a shorter academy on their dime to bring you up to speed on HPD policy/procedure.

This is not an endorsement. I don't know who I'm voting for yet. I heard this from a vet HPD Narcotics officer a couple weeks back. I'll believe it when I see it. Right now, HPD is short some 3,000 officers on the streets and if those eligible to retire today did, then that number would jump. I think all candidates are touting the 'more officers on the streets' election promise. How they go about it is up to them.

Well HPD union is backing Locke. Parker has voted several times against funding for police during her time at city council. She is too liberal for me LOL

Yup, just waiting on the 12-Dec election to see what happens. From the conversation I had with the recruiter, they are hoping for an immediate release of funds for new classes with the new mayor.

I fear that if Parker wins, I might as well give up on my HPD dream because most of the interviews I have read - she believes HPD is well staffed enough and doesn't want to invest in additional academy classes right now.
