  • Pennington County & Custer County

Does anyone on here work for Custer or Pennington County Sheriff's Office? If so are they going to be hiring any time soon and what are wages/benefits etc. like, and would you recommend either one I currently work for a smaller department in the panhandle of Nebraska but would absolutely love to live in the Rapid City/Black Hills area. Any info would be great, thanks in advance.

I don't know about pennington but Custer is not hiring currently, Pennington county I think rarely takes apps for straight patrol, you have to work the jail first. Also Rapid city is constantly accepting applications. PCSO/RCPD both pay in the 19/20 dollar starting range. Custer county is probably closer to 13/14 range.

I have a brother that works for Pennington Co. I don't think they are hiring right now but I'll ask next time I talk to him. I know he said they lose a lot of guys to Rapid City. Better pay & benefits.

When we went on vacation a couple years ago to MT. Rushmore. I stopped in and talked with all three agencies and the Park Service Police. At the time we were on vacation and I was looking to change agencies. Rapid City said they only tested as their budget allowed and they had openings. I was not able to talk with anyone from Pennington CO, but the HR clerk did have me fill out an interest card for the next time they test. Of those two over the last two years I have only heard back from Rapid City. They sent me a notice telling me they were testing, along with an application. That was some time this last summer. I never went up and tested because in the mean time I got hired where I'm at still here in Nebraska.

As for Custer CO. I talked with their two Sergeants and they told me they take applications when they have open positions(At the time I think they had two open spots.). Also they had just hired a female the week I was out to see them. I asked questions and was comparing what I made and benefits at my old agency. When I told them how much I made one of the two kind of looked at me amazed. Both of the Sargent's told me I would not make no where close to that amount there. If I recall right at the time they said the pay would 11 or 12 an hour (Maybe even lower than that). They said they were working on trying to get their benefits and pay up to be competitive with Rapid City and Pennington CO. Not sure if they ever did, but here is the web site they gave me while I was there. They said when they have job openings they post an application on this web site.

One place you may want to check out would be the Park Service Police at Mount Rushmore. When I was there they had just hired a North Platte Officer and was sending him through training in another state. Not sure if any of the information will help you or not, but good luck.

South Dakota is pretty notorious for low pay. If you want to make 16 dollars an hour or more look at rapid city/pennington county or possibly lawrence county/spearfish. east river you may more options.

Spearfish is currently taking applications. They will start at a few cents under $16.00 but raises average almost a dollar a year until you max your pay grade.

If it is your thing, they are pretty much all Chargers and Tahoes for patrol vehicles. Computers and the whole gambit. Plus they treat their people good.

Just don't rely on their website it is pretty dated as far as pictures.

Talked to my brother. Like Wirefire said Pennington isn't hiring but Rapid City has or had some openings. Pennington the guys usually have to start in the jail and he thought there migh be one spot opening
