    Charleston PD

I have a friend who is very interested in the Charleston Police Department and we have a few questions:

    1. What are the shifts like?

    2. Is the morale good or bad?

    3. Weapons issued?

    4. Uniform allowance?

    5. Cost of living?

    6. Just a general description of the crime rate.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help answer.

    1. They work 10 hours shifts, 6a-4p, 2p-12am and 10pm-8am. I think they rotate shifts every 28 days.
    2. Morale; depends who you ask. When I went thru. the process the morale seemed to be high.
    3. Weapons; Glock 23, 40cal.
    4. Uniform allowance-Not sure
    5. Cost of living-not sure
-Overall the department is great. There are about 400 cops with all the units and toys one could want. Crime; check the stats for exact numbers. The cops there are busy, especially downtown.
If you call the HR dept. they are very helpful and can you or your friend on your way.

Read lowcountrycops.com. Morale is in the toilet and the firearm issued is the Glock 23 in .45 not .40

Do you mean the Glock 30? The 23 only is available in .40.

          2. Morale, that will depend on who you talk too. Many I have met, hate it their, however they continue to work...but that is any Law Enforcement agency.

          5. Cost of living...lets see. Most officers live anywhere from 30-60mins out of Charleston itself. Most Law enforcement around Charleston/North Charleston don't live in their city of employment due to the high cost of living.

They did get a pay raise this year for new officers, not sure how much, but with the cost of living...rent is not cheap and housing is off the charts.

Requirements to get hired are a degree though. Anything else, you should call their personnel office.

          6. Crime rate...depends on how you look at it, but they do have volunteer people that walk/patrol the streets in certain areas.
