Authorities: Berkeley County deputy fatally shoots suspect who grabbed gun; suspect identified

ST. STEPHEN - A Berkeley County sheriff's deputy shot and killed a criminal domestic violence suspect who reached for the deputy's gun Saturday night, a spokesman said.

The deputy was attempting to arrest the suspect on a criminal domestic violence warrant about 10 p.m. at 1229 Old Mill Road in St. Stephen, Berkeley County Sheriff's Department spokesman Dan Moon said.

Moon said the suspect grabbed the deputy's gun and the deputy fired the gun.

Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury identified the suspect as Jerome Darby, 23, of St. Stephen.

Moon has not identified the deputy.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting, which is standard procedure in all officer-involved shootings.
