POLICE OFFICER: Performs responsible protective service work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances with required related work. This position requires graduation from high school or GED equivalency, 21 years old to comply with SC Law Enforcement Council entrance requirements and possession of a valid driver’s license. It also requires a thorough background investigation. SC Criminal Justice Certification and experience as a Police Officer is preferred.

REQUIRED: Completed Standard Application, Supplemental application along with required documents as outlined in the document section, Statement of Honesty, Physical Agility Test & Score Sheet, and Personal History Questionnaire. Resumes accepted only with completed application package. Certified police officers, review & sign Authorization to Release Information Form.

SALARY: $30,861/year, plus benefits (non-certified); $33,720/year, plus benefits (SC certified). (free medical, dental, vision for employee)

I just wanted to post a note on some questions I get every time I post a job opening. Perhaps I should post this sooner.

1. You should look for previous topics I've posted on MBPD. I answer a lot of questions and you would have your answer a lot sooner.

On the Police Hiring Process page, it will answer nearly every question I'm usually asked. In short, do a little bit of homework. We DO pay attention to this.

3. If it's a personal in nature question, then please ask in private. I've had some good PM questions that were not answered before, were not on the web site or just private. That's completely understandable.

4. There is no way to know if your out of state certification will transfer to SC until after you are hired. Unfortunately, SC Departments are unable to submit transfer reviews until after the department has hired the applicant. Just graduating a state academy usually wont help in not attending our state academy. However, graduating and working as a sworn (meaning a law enforcement officer, not detention, jailer, etc) officer can play in your favor. Again, we wont know officially until after you are hired.

Hiring numbers

I'm scheduled to come down at the end of the month to test. Just curious if the city has approved a certain number of officers to be hired? Back home departments are only posting with one or two vacancies so I'm hoping my chances are better down in South Carolina.

I'm sorry for the delay in a response, I don't check this site as often after a closing date.

We don't usually give out numbers and the reason is because too many people look only at the numbers and they change too much. For our last process we started looking for 2 slots and actually hired 9. All of our processes work that way. If we said we were hiring for just 1 slot, good candidates might not apply because they "thought" the numbers were against them. In that case, everyone looses. Things change over a hiring process so going into a process may not be the same things we need coming out.

Don't apply or test with us or anyone merely for a job. I don't think you'll get through our process like that. Meaning, apply regardless of how many someone may be hiring because you want a career in law enforcement, it's your dream job. If you think you're one of the most qualified, best possible candidates who wants to work for a great department with fantastic equipment...then apply! Be confident, not cocky and you'll shine through. Whether we're hiring 3 or 10...we'll find you!

Does Myrtle Beach take out of state certifications like NJ without 1 year of full time experience? If so, what is the process, how long do we attend the academy for, and what is the atmosphere like? Thanks

My number one asked question by far! More than likely the state will accept it if you've been a road officer for over a year and have attended an accredited academy. However it's not our decision to make and we won't promise you anything in regards to that.

You will, however, have to attend our pre-service academy. That is mandatory for everyone, no exceptions and runs 9 weeks. PT in the morning typical at 6am and you're off by 3pm.

The state academy is para-military and getting stricter lately. Currently it's 9 weeks (live in) but going to 10 weeks in 2010 and 12 weeks in 2012.

The process should have been explained as far as what takes place after the written, agility and hiring board interview. That process would be your background check and it's going to take some time. We have three processes that closed at the same time and a number of applicants. So please be patient. Regardless of your status, you will be notified.

Additionally, you should have been given you a number to contact if you had any questions. Please PM me if you do not have this number.

If you look at the links above on the first post, you'll see I posted a link to our entire hiring process...front start to finish. I've posted it again below this paragraph in addition to the excerpt from the page:

Applicants must return the completed 20-page Personal Questionnaire before leaving from their interview. The questionnaire will be made available to you after passing the police exam. After the interview process, the department will begin the background investigation on the applicant.

Background Investigation: This process can take up to four weeks and longer depending on the number of applicants.

From what they told me, I wouldn't expect to hear anything until mid January at the earliest. Actually the way they explained it, I HOPE I don't hear anything until then.

Ha! Yes! Longer is better, particularly with three processes going. We are still interviewing for police and will be done with the that part of the process this week. We have Detention and Cadet in front of the police backgrounds I believe...so it could take some time. Be patient and hopefully you'll get a phone call that you moved to the next step in the hiring process!

Yep....I'm legal. And it's not the officers who are the problem. They've always been pretty good during Bike Week!

Nope. Not at the patrol level anyway. Horry County Police and the Sheriff's Department do as well as SCHP.
