  • PA MOPEC Physical Pretesting

I recently had a dicussion with another law enforcement officer about the cooper standards and the physical pretesting required to be admitted into the MOPEC academy. So I thought I'd throw this out to all of you and get your thoughts as well.

Most academys in PA call it pretesting which to me means: Assess the individuals strengths and weaknesses in order to see where he/she presently stands. Now I understand that there has to be a cut off point for people COMPLETELY out of shape. But if it is a pretest, then it seems to make sense that if the run time in the 1.5 mile is a min or so off........300 meter is a few seconds off.....so on and so forth....then these would be times that should be reached with 57 hours of PT in the academy. I think to turn someone down because they missed the 1.5 mile run by 30 sec is a little bit ridiculous.....I have personally seen this happen to a few people in my class.

Now there are circumstances. If an individual fails 2 or the four categories, then they probably need to retest. But what about the individual who passes everything, even scores better than everyone else in the other categories, but misses one of the runs by a small margin?

What are your thoughts on this?

I dont understand why anyone who was serious about their career would show up unprepared. 1.5 miles is not a hard distance to run it requires minimal training those who are not making runs are simply slacking. So no I dont think coming in 1sec late should be okay a fail is a fail.

Those 57 hours of pt are not that much in the grand scheme of life and they should be spent maximizing your potential, not helping you to meet standards.

Edit: I saw in one of your other posts that you are a trainer so I dont want to insult you by saying you are a slacker some people do have trouble with running. But the 1.5 is not that hard try doing some sprint training to up your vo2 and jump rope for foot strike speed which is what its really all about and hills are just plain good for you. Maybe you can give me some tips for uping my bench lol.

Its MPOETC. I agree with GMC34, if you want to be in the Law Enforcement field, then you should already be in shape or atleast 85% close to it.

what are the min times/reps for the test? are they the same as psp? if they are there is no reason to fail...well unless you smoke 2-3 packs a day, weigh over 300 pounds, eat McD's for breakfast lunch an dinner, and are severely disabled. You could make 1.5 miles under time at a brisk walk. Really now. honestly, by know means am i meat head, and when i first statred training for the tests I was passing with time/reps to spare. I totally agree with GMC and figgs.

Most Police departments require you to be able to do atleast the 30th percentile to get into the academy. You must do the 50th percentile to graduate the academy.

I agree with GMC and Figgs as well. All 33 remaining people in my class passed the PT test last Wednesday at the 50th percentile, even the smokers and those packing a few extra pounds. There is no reason that the 30th percentile can't be met to get in and the 50th to graduate. Just my 2 cents...

I agree with the others, I am not an officer, I am applying and going to school for a career as a Police Officer. I had a ride along today with my local department and the officer was talking about the running in the academy and said it like this to me " running is huge, if you have to chase someone down, you want to be able to get them and fight them. Your no good if you get them and your out of gas and they get away or beat you." Plus like the others said, if this is what you want to do I would think having to meet those requirements really is not bad. That's my view.

jju I can see what your point is but, what if the standards were lowered? Then you'd get less than desireable applicants (even less then you get now) then someone else will complain "why should someone get DQ'd for missing the standard by 30 secs?" then what? lower the standard again to suit that person? See where this is going? There are standards for a reason and that's why they're called standards. This is not a career to be taken lightly by people, if someone is serious about it then they know going in that there is a physical aspect to it and they should prepare accordingly.

If you stop a person for attempted burglary are you going to let him go because he attempted but didn't actually commit the burglary? NO! Laws are there for a reason just like standards are.

I agree the test are B.S. the 1 1/2 mile is bull and it should go back to the way it used to be. I was told that you got a percentage for all 4 test. I think it sounded good. I hated the run but fter 18 weeks at the academy then you should be able to pass the run even the smokers in my class passed. I like what they did at the shacog testing, women have an unfiar advantage. If they can do the same things as men then they should be held to the same standards. They get like a min and a half on the run do like 10 less sit-ups and have almost 1:10to run the 300 they bench less and its bull. I agree the MOPETC physical requirments are B.S.

I will be graduating from the Act 120 in January. This morning, we had our 1 1/2 mile run portion and situp portion of the pretest, with the rest to be completed after the holidays. I do not know why they decided to do it that way but oh well.

Our pretest was June 23, 2007. The requirement times are listed above. My group lost 2 guys on the pretest, and then a bunch of guys that made it, for whatever reason, never made it to the class. They most likely got weeded out during the screening process. I originally completed my 1 1/2 mile run in 12:13, 35 situps in 45 seconds, 300 meter run in 62, and benched 165 pounds. At the time, I weighed 162, dropping from 175 due to an injury. I did all of this with a separeted collar bone and a badly sprained ankle. So if someone can't do this in the right time, they probably should not make it.

This morning, for our final, I completed the 1 1/2 mile in 11:13, a full one minute quicker then last time. I did the 40 situps in about 50-55 seconds, and I know I can bench press at least 185, weighing in at 172. 300 meter run, I will find out.
