Does anyone know the requirements to be a deputy in pa. I'm interested in working in McKean, Potter or Tioga. Does anyone have any info on these Sheriff's Office's?

I have looked everywhere to find any type of info on those three counties and all I can find is their address and phone number, which you may already have.

Now here is some info that maybe of help to you:
    Employment Requirements
Act 120 Municipal Police Officers Certification
Possess a high school diploma or the equivalent
Two years experience in law enforcement or corrections
Have a current PA driver's license
Possess adequate physical and mental health to withstand rigorous activity.
Applicants must pass an agility test prior to application. The Sheriff conducts the test every two (2) years.
Obtain and submit an application for employment
    Written Exam
Complete an interview with the sheriff, chief deputy, and commander
Successfully complete a thorough background investigation
    Medical examination
    Drug screening
    Polygraph examination
    Psychological exam
Graduation from the Pennsylvania Deputy Sheriffs

There's only one county in Pa. I think that does road patrol. The rest do the courts, central booking, warrants etc. The 2 deputies killed in Susquehanna County last year were serving a B.S. warrant on a guy they knew for years.
Life is like a 3 ring circus and cops have a front row seat. It`s The Greatest Show On Earth.

I work in Tioga County as a police officer and our sheriff is now attempting to have two of his deputies do minimal roadwork. Both of them are Act 120 certified. And in reference to the two deputies killed serving the warrant I believe you meant Bradford County which borders Tioga to the East.

Hmmm.. How long till the PSP union has a hissy fit because they lose some jurisdiction to a sheriff's office, like they did when Chester co. looked into having a full SO.

Why would you need Act 120 tyo be a deputy when they have their own school at State college?

Whether a county SO has full jurisdiction won't take away jurisdiction from the PSP. Hell right now, the PSP is only bitching b/c they are so short on people. They are supposed to be taking the I-95 corridor and I-76 EXP from PPD....talk about an over burden.

NOTE these are situations as I understand them, I may be wrong, use at your own risk...

Philadelphia Police Dept. has its own Expressway Patrol squad (formerly part of more well known Highway Patrol, which still exists but doesn't do highway patrolling anymore) - anyway, Expressway Patrol patrols the limited access highways (such as I-76, I-95, I-676) within Philadelphia limits. Pennsylvania State Police patrol the limited access highways (LAHs) everywhere else in the state. PA state budget this year will provide for PSP to take over patrol duties from PPD in the coming months. PSP has no barracks deep within the city; Belmont is closest, but it's really right on the city border. They are also I believe short staffed in general, without taking on a whole 'nother ball of wax. I have seen some estimates that 70 additional troopers are needed to assume patrol from Philly, plus more cars, plus X, plus Y, plus Z. I have heard they plan to divide city among 3 barracks - Belmont for 76, Trevose for 95 northern half, Media for 95 southern half.

If a Sheriff or other were to do roadwork, they can only do so on LAHs through an agreement with PSP, unless I am mistaken. (That is, I think municipal/county LE cannot patrol LAHs without a preset agreement with PSP.) Therefore PSP cannot bithc about loss of jurisdiction because a.) there'd be an agreement in place and b.) local LE having such an agreement probably would not preclude PSP from patrolling same LAHs.

On to a long, dull, boring and possibly/probably incorrect backstory to Phila/PSP discord above...

According to (I think) state law, PSP should patrol LAHs; if PSP does not patrol them, leaving it to local police, then the state is supposed to reimburse the locals for cost. Now, Philly PD has patrolled the LAHs for like 50 years without reimbursement, and the city has finally grumbled about budgets etc., and told the state no more free rides - patrol or reimburse, to the tune of something like $5.5 Million/yr. (I think the city wanted the money, since they've ALWAYS patrolled, it'd be like just finding $5.5M more in the budget.) The state called the city's bluff, and will begin patrolling the LAHs in the next 6 mos-1 yr. I hear this plan has been kicked around for 10 years or so. Why this year they decide to go for it, who knows. See Domelights forums for one discussion of the coming debacle; look around that site and you'll find more info.
