  • Prior state time and PSP

I have seven years prior state law enforcement time with a state agency. I have contacted recruiters and they can't fully answer the question I have. How does my other state time carry over? Is my length of time I have to work for retirement decreased and do I start higher on the payscale? I know I will have to purchase the difference I believe.
Does anyone who became a trooper have, with prior state time have any insight?

Did you cash out your prior state time? If not, your state time will carry over towards your PSP retirement without you having to buy it. You've already paid into a state retirement account, so it would just transfer over to PSP. You won't start at a higher pay grade because your pay grade is based on your years with PSP.

Didn't cash out as I didn't leave the current job yet hopefully in November.

      Thanks for the insight.

How does it work with retirement would I work seven less years?

Yep. You will do 18 more and can retire with the full '25'.
