Best Steak, period.
Tourists go to Pat's and Gino's. Ask anyone in South Philly, John's is the place. The steaks and roast pork have no equal. Tony Luke's comes close.

I personally think the best ones are the ones I make at home. I think those other places are rip off's charging anymore then $6 for a sandwich. (tough times make me frugal! LOL)Comment

Where in Philly will you be? If it were up to me, Id go to steves steaks in the Northeast. Sliced instead of chopped, can get with wiz, american, provolone or mozzeralla. Pizza steaks are good too there.
Best traditional Philadelphia Cheese Steaks for nearly 40 years! Steve's Prince of Steaks two-time winner of best Cheese Steaks by Philadelphia Magazine
Pudges is awesome if you want a heart attack and I will second Johns roast pork. Tony Lukes is good also, but if its cold better hope they put up the plexiglass. Geno's and Pats are both rip off's if your going to South Philly.I don't answer recruitment messages....Comment

Im going up there with my girlfriend to visit her sister at UPenn..... we're staying at some Sheraton, not exactly sure what part of Philly either are in though.
Definitely know now to stay away from Geno's and Pats lol. Steves looks like its pretty good also! its seems like most people prefer wiz over everything else...... is it a better preference over provolone overall?Comment

I love the Steak Italiano at Tony Lukes. If I see one more commercial or go somewhere outta this area that advertises a "Philly Cheesesteak" with green peppers, I am gonna go postal. There has NEVER been green onions on a cheesesteak.
P.S. On a side note, Tony Lukes makes their own rolls and his breakfast sammiches are spectacular.Being a good street cop is like coming to work in a wet suit and peeing in your pants. It's a nice warm feeling, but you're the only one who knows anything has happened.Comment

Depends on where you go. Some places do a better whiz than American/Provolone, some do not... most of the places inside of Philly you'll probably do best with Whiz. Anything outside Philly (Montco, etc) consider going American, but again, that's a general rule and many people might disagree with me.You, you, and you: Panic. The rest of you, come with me.Comment

You can get a good steak from the lunch trucks that are all over university city. Since you will be in University City, easiest way to John's will be to go down (if your driving) is to take Chestnut to Delaware ave (aka Columbus Blvd) and then follow Delaware Ave. (Columbus Blvd) to the Lowes (Snyder ave). Just park in there. But realize 1 thing. John's closes @ 3pm and is Mon-Fri. Tony Lukes about a mile from there on Oregon Ave.
If your willing to go into an ok neighborhood (if your driving) try Slacks hoagie shack on Arimingo Ave.I don't answer recruitment messages....Comment

If your going to Penn....your in West Philly. Get a Cab and tell him or her to take you to Tony Luke's " Front Street and Oregon Ave" in South Philly...it's going to be a 15 bucks for a one way cab ride...or give me a shout if I'm free I'll drive you over..

Pats and Genos are nasty as hell, they make them at a quality for tourists. Out of towners don't know the difference.
There are plenty places in Philly to get a good steak, but I'll name one. Dalessandro's in Roxborough, make really good steaks. You should def try them out. I prefer american over the wiz.Comment

If you happen to find yourself in Jersey, Gaetano's is really good.
If you are around trenton or bordentown Anthony's makes pretty good pizza and steaks

Pat's and Geno's are nasty and disgusting. Some people like Wiz, Myself I think it is nasty. I'm not even sure it legally can be called cheese.Comment
