does anyone here work for WCSO? My wife and I are considering moving to the area and I am looking for a good PD or SO to work for. I am currently a police officer in Mesquite, TX, and would like to work for a department/city of similar size or a county. How is WCSO's reputation with the community and with the criminals? Are they allowed to chase for any reason or do they have a chase policy that only allows them to chase for a violent felony? Are they an aggressive department where the officers are allowed to do their job without micro management from upstairs? What kind of weapons do they carry? Are you allowed to carry a personal firearm or do you have to carry what they issue (which I assume is a Glock) These are just a few questions. Any information anyone can provide will be much appreciated. Thanks! -JKey

I applied before being hired by my current SO. All I really know is that WCSO is short on funding right now, and it could be a little while before they hire again. A good lateral has an advantage though, and calling to ask about openings can't hurt.

what SO do you work for now? is it in the Portland area? how do you like it? my main concern with working for an SO is being required to work in the jail. i don't wanna work in the jail or i would apply to be a jailer somewhere. Do most SO's require you to do time in the jail?

Not the ones that I've seen. Mainly they have different openings for jail staff and patrol staff. There may be some SO's that still do that, but the ones that I've applied with and know of don't require you to work in the jail first. Although some people say it is the easiest way to get onto the road, by working the jail first with the SO that you want to do patrol with.

My understanding, as of last week, WCSO is hiring Laterals only right now. One downfall is the Sheriff just switched everyone to 5 8hr shifts per week. I'm aquainted with a few Deputies there and there seems to be quite a few guys jumping ship. But that's just what I have seen. Good luck!

I have a buddy who just did his interviewed this week for entry. Maybe for future testing it'll only be for laterals?
