Keep your nose out of our business rookie

If I remember, I'll PM ya over on Pirate. I don't have any details on the AD except on who had the AD, which is totally surprising.

"he took the gun out and it accidentally fired"

While I know what the author meant, I am making this post so that people will consider what they say and write. The intent here is to say that the instructor accidentally shot another instructor, but the structure of the sentence assigns blame to the firearm. The firearm didn't accidentally do anything. It is a tool that functioned properly.

Statements like "it fired accidentally" can subconsciously reduce the the responsibilty of the user, while assigning blame to the firearm. How many times have we denounced the vitriolic speech of the anti-gun crowd as they demonize firearms. Let us be wary of falling, even slightly, into the same trap.

    Instructor shot at police academy

    By Josh Rabe
    Staff Writer

ADA — Officials are investigating an accidental shooting last week at the state's police training center in Ada.
An instructor shot another instructor in the arm Thursday evening at the Council on Law Enforcement and Training's training facility in Ada, said Steve Emmons, a spokesman for the agency.

Emmons said a class of cadets had been dismissed for the day when the shooting occurred. He said it appears the officer accidentally fired his weapon but it remains unclear why.

"We're satisfied it wasn't a horseplay situation,” said Charles Spencer, the agency's assistant director.

The wounded officer was treated at an Ada hospital for his injuries, which appeared to be minor, Emmons said. The officer who fired the shot, whose name isn't being released, has been placed on administrative leave during the investigation.

A group of four instructors had gathered in an office near the firing range to discuss the next day's activities Thursday. One of the officers went into his office to put up a non-functioning practice pistol used in training exercises and put his loaded service revolver back in his holster, Emmons said.

After he returned to the room with the other instructors he took the gun out and it accidentally fired, striking another officer in the arm just above the elbow, Emmons said.

Emmons said he couldn't elaborate on why the officer drew his weapon.

"I don't want to speculate why he did what he did,” Emmons said.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting and CLEET is conducting its own internal investigation, Emmons said.
