  • OCSO - Questions

    Hey all,

Is there anyone on here that can answer some Oklahoma County Sheriff questions? I have been reading through the old posts but nothing is very recent. I have general questions that I am interested in.

    Thank you in advance,

Curious about their hiring process, pay, academy, moral.. In the past, it seemed that their pay was low and people were somewhat apprehensive in working there. It is my understanding that you will pretty much be guaranteed to work the jail for a min of a year as well.

Are the officers actual officers (carry firearms, cleet etc?) or is that only for patrol?

I believe that only the deputies are fully commissioned peace officers (CLEET certified to carry firearms). The detention officers I don't believe are certified peace officers. I could be wrong though.
I'm pretty sure the county still isn't paying their deputies very well. It would be great if I was wrong, but I think my statement is accurate.
I looked on their website: http://www.oklahomacounty.org/sheriff/careers/ and it indicates that there are currently no positions available. Could be out of date though.

They do have Full time Deputies that work in the Jail . That are fully commissioned peace officers (CLEET certified to carry firearms). The Deputies that work the jail don't carry Firearms in the Jail .They also have Full time Deputies at the Court house and the mall and Patrol etc
Yes the Deputies that have went to CLEET ARE full Officers with the same CLEET as other Police Departments . The Jail has Detention Officers and Deputies.
Pay is low for the Job. They pay once a month. Health insurance is great . You have a 401k Plan , get sick days, holiday days vacation etc They put on a DO Class pretty often. Yes you will be in the Jail a year or more before making Deputy unless you get real lucky. As far as moral I'm not the best to answer as I'm looking for a new job after 10 plus years there.I will say I love those that I work with daily I've enjoyed my time there but it's time for me to move on so I can futher my career.

I have a question. Do any other jail/detention centers put their DO's through CLEET? Like Edmond or MidWest City?

                  Edmond does not.

Word from Cleveland Co. is that they are wanting to hire around ~20 Detention Specialists in June, in anticipation of their new jail opening later this year. Starting salary is $31k/yr.

As far as CLEET goes.. I have first hand knowledge of working in their detention center and then later being transferred to patrol. They have sent several to CLEET from the jail and I anticipate that will only increase with the opening of their new jail and the likelihood that they will be doing prisoner transports to and from the court house, etc.

                    Their employment website is:
                    http://www.clevelandcountysheriff.org/Employment.html

I no longer work there, but I assume the above information is still accurate.

Cops-Wife is right. I have a friend who spent at least 3 years in the jail before being given the opportunity to be a deputy on the streets. He had to take a pay cut and works countless side jobs to make ends meet. I hear CO's there spend a good bit of time in the jail prior to hitting the streets if you even get to.
