You are also not permitted to carry off-duty as a reserve unless specifically authorized in writing by your agency head.

        1. Reserves go through about 1/3rd of the training that full-time officers do. Full-time officers (with the exception of a few large departments) have to go to Ada, OK for CLEET, where as reserve academys are put on by departments around the state and only have a minimum requirement for training, so sometimes things like LEDT, SFST, taser, rifle qualification, etc... are not included unless that department wants it.

        2. Most reserves are not paid and might have to buy some or all of their own equipment. I had to buy everything except a badge, pager, and one uniform. Everything else is out of pocket (gun, vest, duty belt, ammo, etc...)

        3. Most departments don't allow reserves as much freedom while working. This might include not able to pursue suspects, patrol on your own, etc... This is all dependant on the department itself.

        4. Reserves have pretty much the same authority (ie power of arrest) as full-time officers per the state.

        5. You are limited to how many hours you can work in a month. I think it's around 110 hours for smaller departments.

        6. You can't carry a concealed weapon w/o authorization from your department, where as full time officers can carry w/o authorization.

        7. I don't believe you are required to take CE classes, which full-timers have to take so many hours a year.
