Thank you for the information, I was wondering because I only took the cope but I knew some people had received notification on tests. Best of luck to you and thanks again.

Today I received confirmation that I passed the written portion. The email still listed mid-Oct as to when they'll give placement into a band for the COPE, and held to the Oct. 29th for physical assessments to begin.

I unfortunately incurred a broken bone last weekend that hinders my ability to do all the tasks, especially push ups. Planning to start physical therapy next week and work towards getting back to full strength ASAP. Fingers crossed my body is ready for the testing.

        Congrats!

I got my COPE results today, as well. I placed in 80 band. I'm happy with that considering I second guessed the whole thing after each and every portion about how terrible I felt I responded.

I scheduled my physical assessment for the 2nd. Trying to give myself long as possible to be healed and physically able again. I can do the running and sit ups just fine, it's just those darn push ups not meshing well with my injury.

Congrats! Good luck with the PT test. I recently had hip surgery so I understand trying to nurse your injuries before the test.

I received my email and scored a 96! I can't believe it! 90 band, baby!

Just have a question for anyone who has either been given a final offer or gone through the academy...with being in the 80 band should I go ahead and reapply to try and get 90 for 2021 or with 80 spots will any of the 80 band be processed?

So answer to your question yes they do end up processing the 80 band. But it doesn’t hurt to reapply the only thing is you won’t be able to reapply until next June or July.

Congrats everyone, got my email yesterday. Do they pull 99 scores before 95 scores for example? Obviously they are both banded in the 90’s but will the higher 90 scores be looked at first? Just curious on that part. Once again congrats everyone and good luck on the PT portion.

I can tell you that they process all of the 90 band people first then go to the 80 band. I don’t know if they process someone who is a 97 before someone who is a 94. I think if your in the 90’s (no matter what 90 you are) they will get to you. Don’t know if that answers your question.

From what I've read, 80 band is still pretty solid. A lot more people than you think get weeded out in poly and background from 90 band.

Doing some rough guesstimation, I figured 600 applicants made it to the pre-hiring process examination. Out of that, I imagine at least 1/4-1/3 failed to pass the written and/or multiple choice portion. That narrows it down to 400-450. Then if you equally split that number among the scoring for the verbal, you're at 133-150 per band. Likely, I would imagine it's not split evenly. Even if it was and you lose another 1/4 in poly and another 1/4 in background from the 90 band, you're down to 75-85 people. I'd imagine out of those at least another 1/4 are going to fail to make it through the remaining 5 steps, leaving you with 60 folks -- best case scenario. Through all that guesstimative reasoning, I'd expect 80 bands to get pulled into the official selection process within a month or two after it begins for the 90 bands.

According to last years numbers provided by the CSC a total of 408 candidates made it through the first 4 phases with 120 of those candidates being in the 90 band. I reached out to ask CPD how many 80 banded candidates were selected for hire but no response yet so I’ll update when or if they are able to answer that question..so with all that being said if you pass the first 4 phases using last years result you have a 1 in 5 shot of being hired before any other elimination factors!

I guess my rough guesstimation was closer than I expected!

I definitely would stay in the running if in the 80 band. None of us know how many made the 90 band and how many will drop out or be ruled out along the way. I heard a story from OSHP auxiliary that a guy lied on his polygraph and was eliminated because he lied (it was something that happened years prior and they said it would not have been a problem had he not lied). How many people in this process will do something like that? How many people will drop out because a family crisis happens? Will Columbus budget more officers the start the academy next December? You just don’t know, so hang in there if this is something you really want.

Bryzdogg what prevented you from selection last year? If it’s not personal obviously

Not personal really. Things didn’t really work out and I was encouraged to apply again. This is a long process. Let us hope they get to the 80 band this time. I know people who were in 80 band last year that said they never even got processed. So keep a level head and probably be prepared to apply again if you are 80 band or lower.

I called this week and got a little bit of info:

They are still adding veteran's points, but they estimated to have 145 in the 90 band. Don't let that discourage you...people will continue to drop out. They might not pass the PT test or they might be removed after a background check or polygraph or they might remove themselves because they can't wait until June to work.

I also asked how they will work the 90 band. They said the eligibility list gets handed over to the Department of Public Safety and it will be up to that agency to decide how they work it. In the past, they have worked it in score order, but with the last firefighter group, they worked it by Columbus addresses first.

Just keep working hard like you will be in the next academy class and don't give up hope!

On a related side note, I was talking to one of the FCSO chiefs the other night and he told me that so many people end up eliminated during the process. They don't pass the PT or they lie on the polygraph or they have done some weird things that are disqualifiers - DV, prostitution, theft, drugs, child porn, etc.

Good luck to everyone doing the PT test this week! I did it today and it goes pretty fast.

Just remember why you are doing this and go hard!

How many were in your test and how many failed if any? Was it awkward doing the run-around the basketball court?

My group had 9 and everyone passed. They said they think that is the first time that has ever happened. At least one other was in the 90 band and one in the 80 band. Not many people discussed this topic.
I will be interested to hear how many showed up to test.

Just tested for the initial PT test...tested with 6 in my group at 8:20...only 4 passed and of that 4, 1 was 90 the rest of us were 80...like 4 on list didn't show so...nothing to play with it is pretty quick from running to sit-ups and that is where both failed...just wanted to update all

I've commented a few times so i'll throw my 2 cents in. I tested about 5 or 6 years ago and made it all the way to the panel interview before absolutely being crushed there... Put yourself in the best position to be hired obviously. This testing process is long and difficult, i sat at about a year from start to finish. If another process starts, it never hurts to throw your name into that as well. Even with a spotless record and great test scores it takes some luck to get hired as you will be going against hundreds of other potentials. The minute that you apply for a major department you should be on a regular workout program and see where you sit with the testing requirements physically.

Make sure you prepare where i failed, the panel interview. Do your research and be confident in your answers if you are lucky enough to make it to that point. I failed because i wasn't ready and lacked experience in that type of interview type. Be ready !

Can you elaborate on the Panel interview? What makes it so difficult?

            • #30
I would just add that the Oral board interview is supposed to be difficult. If you can’t handle that, you will most definitely have difficulty in the academy and ultimately on the streets.

Just remember that that oral board is designed to have you answer to any and all questions regarding your background. Be prepared to own up to ALL your mistakes and everything from poly and PHQ is fair game. Also, if your previously applied they have all your prior polys and PHQs and they will ask you about them.

it’s tough for a reason. I would also be prepping for VO2 max test as that is absolutely no joke. Preparing for that will help with academy.

lastly I would give you a heads up that if you are heavy lifting, I would back it off. Start doing more body weight, high rep type. You will not be lifting heavy weight in academy. Get your abs and push ups squared away.

Decembers class will have roughly 80 recruits with a large number from outside agencies.

hit me up with any other questions.

Poly from CPD? They probably still have it. Just be prepared to discuss issues from it. I know of polys being used from over 5 years ago.

Yes, from CPD. I took the poly in 2010 and passed but was disqualified due to some information. I will be prepared to discuss, thanks for the info!
