Just wanted to see how working at the prison is , as I posted I have been trying to get into parole. With no luck thus far, going this way may provide an opportunity for transition. Wanted to get some opinions on how people liked the job ect.

Well, I personally love working for the ODRC the pay is great not so much with out the over time but my home institution we have unlimited amounts of over time unlike other institutions. As far as the APA, parole/probation officers go its very competitive and typically the state is going to hire within the state before the hire anyone on the outs. Reason being is these individuals have already had the training within the institutions and have had worked with and know majority of the offenders going through the institutions already. Not to mention the union pays for college tuition so people are able to secure a college degree in corrections or law enforcement on top of it. If you want to get into being a parole or probation or APA I'd advice getting on with the state and getting yourself established there. I believe you have to have two years experience with the state or have college education so if you already have college you would just need to make your 1 year probation time and then you can start applying for those positions around the state. Having prior corrections or law enforcement experience is a huge plus and will get you there quicker rather than coming off the street. Like I said it's very competitive.

Yes , I've had 8 interviews for new hires with apa. I'm told that I would need to transfer into a case management unit and then after a year I can go to open apa. Any idea on if there is required wait to go into that position ? Also , I have my bachelor in cj already. Do they offer any added increase off the bat for this ? I have law enforcement already and also mental health case management as well. I interviewed a few years ago so I'm trying again.

Yea you can work as a case manager and then transition over to the APA and honestly bud a lot of people do that and that's how they fill the positions so quickly. My opinion man if you can hire into the state as a case manager because you can off the street, go through the Ohio Corrections training academy with a Cj degree already in hand complete the one year probation you will pretty much be guaranteed a APA position. Case managers and APA officers are on the same pay scale too. So if I were you I would go to the Ohio.gov website or government website and apply for multiple openings positions for case managers and get on. I think you will be golden bud but don't settle just for what's close to home, you may have to relocate temporarily and then once you're established within the department you can apply for closer to home.

And the last I heard yes you will get extra points for the education unless it has changed but that last I heard you do extra points.

Are they listed as case manager jobs on the website or something else ? I've been told they are rare to post those because they are filled by co's internally. If I start as a co , Is there a waiting period to apply internally from co to case management?

I believe so on the government jobs website and yes that's true because co's like myself want to be APA officers or case managers. It's very competitive but they do come up man just a continuous cycle, I'll double check Friday when I go in and see but I'm pretty sure they post as case manager postings. If you start as co you would have a high chance because you are working with inmates all the time. Me and another co can have to 274 inmates together at one given time and your experience and education will put you over the top for case manager or APA.

Okay, they're called Correctional Program Specialists. If you click this link: https://www.governmentjobs.com/caree...ram+specialist , and it should have two openings right now for a couple of places. Hope this helps for you, one closes in 5 days the other one is in a week so I would hurry and apply to them.

Thanks man, that helps a bunch. One more question for ya, if I do go the route of the CO , do you know if there is a waiting period if I wanted to internally apply to the specialist position. I know its a year from the specialist to adult parole but was wondering if they have something required before I would even be able to try if I started as a co and went into the specialist.
