  • License Plate Issue

I live and work in Kentucky and we stopped a vehicle last evening with an Ohio plate that we simply could not figure out even after trying to call the OSHP dispatch. I'm going to try to describe the plate and hope somebody can help me out.

The plate was one of the "older" style Ohio plates with the White background and blue/red border with "Ohio" and "The birthplace of Aviation" written on the top. On the left hand side centered top and bottom in about 3 or 4 inch numbers was "10" In full size numerics was "L3XZ" and this started at about the midway point right to left. All the letters and numbers were in Blue. On the bottom of the plate, centered was the word "SPECIAL" written in dark letters and on the bottom left hand corner was a registration sticker that said 05-12 with various smaller writing around the numbers including the plate numbers/letters.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. The VIN came back registered to an expired vehicle here in Kentucky.

    Thanks.

This should probably cover it. Usually see them used as dealer plates or as an extra plate carried by a tow truck to put on a car being towed without a plate. Be safe.

    Ohio Revised Code Section 4503.31
There are several legal uses for special Ohio registration. They include:

On motor vehicles owned and being used in testing or demonstrating for the purpose of sale or lease (leasing dealer license required).
On motor vehicles subject to the rights and remedies of a secured party (repossession).
On motor vehicles being held or transported by any insurance company for the purpose of salvage disposition.
On motor vehicles being transported by any persons regularly engaged in salvage operations or scrap metal processing from the point of acquisition to their established place of business (salvage dealer license required).
On motor vehicles owned or in lawful possession of an Ohio non-profit corporation while being used in testing.
By persons regularly and primarily engaged in the business of rustproofing, reconditioning, or installing equipment or trim for motor vehicle dealers (transporting dealer owned motor vehicles to and from the dealer's place of business).
By persons engaged in manufacturing articles for attachment to motor vehicles when being transported to and from places where mechanical equipment is attached to the chassis of new motor vehicles.
On motor vehicles being towed by any person regularly and primarily engaged in the business of towing motor vehicles to a point of storage.
On trailers being transported by persons engaged in the business of selling tangible personal property other than motor vehicles.

Thank you very much. We tried calling the OHSP out of Cinci and no one up there could give us any information for some reason. Thanks again. I guess we made the right choice in just citing the driver for his speed and lack of Insurance as it seems the plate was legal and being used properly even though there was no paperwork in the car explaining the plate.

      Thanks again.
