Hey, wondering if anyone could give me some information on how and if I can transfer from MI to NC...I have only been part time for a month but need something full time and am willing to relocate. Do I have to attend an academy or can I just test out?

I do not believe you can test out. You would have 2 options, either attend BLET and look for a job while doing so, or seek out a department that will hire you and then send you to an academy. Most large departments, including Charlotte, recruit continuously and have a fairly constant flow of people into recruit classes. CMPD starts a class about every 4-6 months, but smaller departments probably do so at a slower rate. To my knowledge, CMPD (and other departments) certainly recruit out of state candidates. The up side of CMPD (and several others) is that while you do have to complete the academy again, you are an employee and being paid while you do it. Attending BLET on your own dime is the other option. BLET is offered through the community colleges.Comment

Most of the way CMPD is tapping the out of state pool is by way of the military that is how they got in touch with me, I came back from Iraq in late July of 2006 and tested up at Fort Drum in Sept for the CMPD. Before that I never really gave CMPD any thought I tested with the NYPD and was in their hiring pool but with the low pay and the high cost of living I sided with CMPD.
About 14 days or so and I start training, so far I like the city of charlotte very nice weather not a big difference from the midwest this time of year but, when it gets colder I am pretty sure I will be able to tell.
For some people who dont have the time or money to come down to charlotte to test I would say look on the website find the nearest military base to where they will be testing next and talk to the ACAP office about letting you get on post to test. Since I have been picked up by the CMPD, I dont really look for any department anymore but the odd thing is before I was looking at almost every state to find a Law Enforcement job and now, Irving, Texas calls almost once a week and the Las Vegas Police department has also called I tested with them about a year and half ago. Nice area also but the cost of living is sky high and you are dealing with so many people who are just visiting and dont know anything about the laws so it would be the same ole same ole every single day.Comment
