  • NC Corrections Officer faces DWI for fatal crash

A state Department of Correction employee was charged Monday in a Sampson County wreck that killed a mo-ped operator, authorities said.

What a dumb@$$, He lost his job before he even got started good, and killed someone in the process..............Feel bad for the young man who was killed.

Clinton, N.C. — A state Department of Correction employee was charged Monday in a Sampson County wreck that killed a mo-ped operator, authorities said.

David Craig Wemyss, 52, of Warrenton, was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, driving while impaired and failing to reduce speed, said First Sgt. D.L. Hewitt of the state Highway Patrol. He was released from jail on a $10,000 bond.

Wemyss was southbound on U.S. Highway 421 outside of Clinton at about 12:10 a.m. Monday when his Ford Explorer hit a mo-ped from behind, Hewitt said. The SUV was traveling at about 55 mph at the time of the collision, he said.

The mo-ped operator, Bruce Lee Holder, 24, was thrown from the vehicle and died, Hewitt said. He said Wemyss drove for more than a mile after the collision with the mo-ped on the hood of his SUV before pulling over.

"(Wemyss) showed some impairment from some type of impairing substance," Hewitt said "It did not appear to be alcohol."

A breath test showed no alcohol in Wemyss' system, Hewitt said. Blood tests are pending.

Brenda Holder said her son was a sporting goods manager at the Walmart in Clinton and was on his way home from work when he was killed.

"He didn't drink. He didn't do drugs. He (did) his job," Brenda Holder said, adding that her son was saving money to buy a car so he wouldn't have to use a mo-ped to commute.

Officials said Wemyss, who was hired three months ago as a detention officer at Warren Correctional Institution, was on his way to a four-week training session at the North Carolina Justice Academy in Salemburg when the wreck occurred.

If he was impaired by non-prescription drugs I hope the charges get upgraded to second degree murder.

What a screwup, crap like this gives all of us a bad name.
Just remember you could work one day in the law enforcement field and when you screw up 20 years later the media will give you that title.
Not sure if that came out right but you get the point.

Being a former employee of the NCDOC I will simply say, I am not surprised one little bit!

Question for anyone that can offer advice. I recently received a notice to take the written examination for NCDOC. Does anyone know of what an average corrections 1st year officer earns and what they can expect if anything from overtime? Is this a worthwhile job to pursue or would you recommend looking for something else. Thanks to anyone that can provide information.

Starting pay for a correctional officer is $27,309. The state is bad off for money and they recently cut all state employees pay by 1% or something like that. I doubt there is overtime available...maybe for transports, but they also have dedicated transport officers, at least in some places.

I personally could not do corrections. It takes a special person for that career field and it's a different kind of law enforcement that I wouldn't want. On the plus side for you, there are always openings.

There is more personnel information on the DOC website that you could ever hope for.

              what an idiot.

we had a former sergeant at RCC when I worked there for the same thing, drinking and killed someone while he was driving.

Maybe he will be smart and take a long walk off of a short pier and save the people some time and money.
