  • NYOAG Medicaid Fraud Investigators

Does anyone know anything about the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit at the NY Attorney General’s office? I believe they are hiring for detective investigator positions (need 10 years of experience as a PO) as well as for a few trainee investigator positions (entry-level). Anyone work there, or with these guys, or know what their day-to-day and reputation is? Any feedback would be appreciated. I am thinking of applying for a trainee position (I am a paralegal at another agency looking to become an investigator, and I have some of the language and computer skills they seem to like). Unfortunately, I am too old for NYPD or another local police agency, or I’d go that route first; I know people dislike folks who have not worked patrol trying to become investigators, but being over 37 I don’t have a choice…

Some of my colleagues ended up leaving our Office to work for the NYS AG for the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit in Manhattan. Most of them have since departed to pursue more lucrative uniformed patrol opportunities, but one of them (I think) still works there. By and large, they seemed to enjoy the job and its perks. From what I heard, pay raises are frequent, you get a take home vehicle, and the work is interesting.

In my view, the biggest downside to the job is the 30 year retirement. As for your question on reputation, a lot of my colleagues in law enforcement don't even seem to be aware of the fact that the OAG has a cadre of sworn police officer investigators. Hope this helps, and best of luck to you in your career pursuits.
