Isn't it worth the time and stress to take the time and break down every possible situation you may run into and find the best solution to navigate each situation. When it comes to facial hair/appearance you may just run into someone who is of an older time, and still hold people to those standards. I know that when I run into that person the little things go a long way like being well groomed, instead of saying yea say yes, and standing up to shake someones hand with eye contact. This is how I treat every interview, they have something I want and I'm going to take every excuse they have not to give it to me. You may just want to be a cop but I need to be in some sort of career that allows me to provide for my family even when I'm still not here. That may just be the difference between us and it helps me understand why you don't have the same sense of urgent when it comes to getting into a career.Comment

I feel like we could have quite an entertaining conversation about this, which may leave at least one of us enlightened so I feel obligated to accept this open invitation.

Agreed. I'd never step foot into any job/school/pd interview in anything less than a suit (std black, nothing fancy...it's not a casino), tie, dress shoes etc...
IIRC, for SCPD auxiliary I believe my investigator actually told me specifically to wear a black suit for the interview.
The only times I didn't wear a suit, at least for when I did the suffolk process for auxiliary, were the times where I was just being processed by civil service workers like for the medical, agility test and written psych test where I just sat at a computer answering 600+ questions. I did wear a suit again when I met wit the actual psychologist for the oral psych though. It's not an interview per say, but you are meeting with a professional who will also be dressed nicely and it just shows you have respect for the process and their profession.
As for grooming, keep in mind most police departments require you to shave (unless you have a medical/religious waiver) and not have crazy long hair. I would imagine that looking the part (looking as if you fit in to the department for which you are applying) would not be a bad thing.Last edited by Kris396; 01-21-2015, 12:23 PM.Comment
