First, you tell us your doctor diagnosed "major depression" but apparently didn't refer you to a specialist or prescribe any medication. Now you tell us the doctor prescribed Propranolol because you "asked for it."

Physicians like that are known as "Doctor Feegood" until they are known as "defendant" and then "inmate."
Your confusing him with the person that started the thread.

I would take the NYPD over my Ph.D regardless of pay just because I know I'll love the job.
You need to take psychiatric drugs to stay level? Sorry, but a Police career is not for you. You won't have time to pop whatever pill it is that you need to calm down during an 85 or 13 and no one will want to be around you to see the results when you don't. Part of doing this job and what makes a Police Officer different from everyone else is our ability to handle copius amounts of stress when it counts the most. We don't rely on pills to calm us down. We handle our sht and we do it without falling apart (most of us anyway). You're better off pursuing your PHD although we all know you'd rather be the police in spite of your snobby remarks on pay disparity, otherwise you wouldn't be here asking these questions now would you?

While there are of course exceptions to the norm, (1) we must not be looking at the same BLS stats (which only state average/median pay based primarily on national population surveys) or (2) you must be confused about department compensation. Anyhow, this isn't a money issue. I was merely pointing out that statements like:

are rationalizations and a defense mechanism, which is completely fine and normal, but that you just just keep a realistic mindset, that's all.

Everyone is evaluated on a case by case basis. There is no definite answer. Only time will tell

Yes I presume? Considering my doctor diagnosed me. He referred me to a psych, but I never followed up with it, nor went to see one. Came back after a month or so and told the doctor I'm doing quite well and that was that. End of story

Your response peaked my interest in this thread enough to answer. The above response of "only you will know" seems to be correct. What I am wondering is if you are still depressed... Are you?

Your post has led me to believe you are either in denial of your depression or trying to hide it. Example : You stated "you told" your doctor you are better and not that you "are better." Am I mincing words? Maybe.

This is your life. Being able to take care of yourself should take priority before you serve the public as a LEO. Entering the field of Law Enforcement while not being fit to do the job because it is a dream seems selfish to me.

What do I know though... I'm just a civie aspiring to be a LEO.

I really don't like those silly,non-substance "cooking shows"...to me they all GIGO.

former candidates tend to vent their frustrations on these threads rather than moving on with their lives in a different direction.
