    Job Description
    The Finance Department seeks to hire responsible detail-oriented individuals to perform the duties of criminal investigators. Assigned in the Office of Tax Enforcement, the selected candidates will handle complex and hazardous tax investigations, enforce department policies and procedures, and recommend resolutions to issues dealing with investigations and other office operations. Criminal investigators are responsible for conducting criminal and civil investigations of reported or suspected violations of New York City and State tax laws. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, enforcement of the NYC Cigarette Excise Tax laws and the collection of evidence to establish that businesses and/or individuals have violated State and City tax laws.


    Minimum Qual Requirements
    1. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and five years of satisfactory, full-time experience, acquired within the United States in one or a combination of the following: performing investigations involving criminal and/or fraudulent activities; evaluating credit histories; searching for assets; and/or researching, compiling and/or locating evidence or information in order to build a case or uncover activities of criminal, corrupt, unlawful or unethical nature involving public or private funds, one year of which shall have been in a supervisory or administrative capacity; or
    2. An associate degree or 60 semester credits from an accredited college, including or supplemented by 12 semester credits from an accredited United States college in criminal justice, forensic science, police science, criminology, criminal justice administration and planning, and/or law or related field and three years of satisfactory, full-time experience as described in "1" above, one year of which shall have been in a supervisory or administrative capacity; or
    3. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of satisfactory, full-time experience as described in "1" above, one year of which shall have been in a supervisory or administrative capacity; or
    4. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1", "2", or "3" above. However, all candidates must have a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and have one year of supervisory or administrative experience in the areas described in "1" above. Undergraduate college credit can be substituted for experience on the basis of 30 semester credits, from an accredited college, including or supplemented by 6 semester credits in the areas described in "2" above for one year of experience.


    Preferred Skills
    Knowledge of the Unit’s workflow is a plus.

    In the Department of Finance:

    Employees in this class of positions are designated as Peace Officers by the New York State Criminal Procedure Law. Therefore, candidates must be found qualified to serve as Peace Officers.

    Candidates must possess a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in New York State.

    Peace Officer eligibility and driver license must be maintained for the duration of employment.

    Employees are required to carry a firearm while on duty.

    Employment is contingent on the passing of medical, psychological and drug screening.

    In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification document form upon hire.

    New York City residency is required.

    Residency Requirement
    New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.

    Thanks, looks interesting. Does anyone have anymore info on this position? Typical workday, duties, G-ride, OT, annual raises, job satisfaction, joint task force etc?

        Good job. They have a few in different task forces. OT must get approved prior to doing OT and is case by case. Weekends off. No g ride.

        They like to hire prior investigators.
