I was also called in for a second interview after he requested more documents. Mine lasted around an hour or maybe more. The following Monday I was cleared by my psychologist. In my opinion a second interview is a very good thing it's that he wanted to confirm something.

You can also dig yourself into a deeper hole on a second interview. So it all depends on how well that second interview went.

  • Question, how common is it to get the call for an up coming
class after being on Psych Review for 5 months without being called for a second interview? I only ask because I’ve gotten everything my Psychologist requested especially after he stated his supervisor requested more documentation (which I got sent over the next day) this being in the beginning of July. All my exams have been redone, so I just want to know if anyone has been on the same boat.

you haven't said if you are cleared for hire or if they told you that a preliminary decision has been made on your file or if you're still on review.

rb1152013 Candidate Relations has told me im currently on Psych Review, that was last week, from my understanding the next class is going in on the 24th of October, I just wanted to know if anyone’s been in my situation and got cleared and call down to the wire?

  • Hey guys, anyone have experience with being on the oral psych "will call" list after taking the written a few months prior? The October academy is just a few weeks away and still no oral appointment. I have finished all other steps.

I believe it depends on your list number and if it’ll be used for the approaching October class. You can contact your investigator or APD for more info.

  • If you failed the psych do you get an email stating that there was a problem?

Contact your investigator about a week after your Oral Psych interview. They will let you know if you’re on review or not. Also you can contact APD to find out your status as well. The Psych Department won’t email you unless your psychologist requires documents from you, or if you’re receiving the NOPD (which normally takes months after being on review).

  • I've been on psych review for about 6 months. Psychologist said I am on review, which can last a long time due to amount of candidates, etc. They received all my records and no additional paperwork is due. Said a preliminary decision has been made, did not say what it was, and said to wait because a final decision can take months. Also said IF I am deemed unsuitable, I can appeal. That made me nervous, but I know that is also the standard response. This was all months go.

If they tell you a preliminary decision has been made, does that always mean no?

From what I've read that is generally not a good thing. But each decision must be reviewed by a supervisor.

  • I was on review for 7 months. I took the written and oral psych in February and just got off last month in September so do not get discouraged! I'm scheduled to retake my JST next Wednesday, October 10th. I only found out because I emailed APD. You should all sign up if you haven't already done so. They are very helpful in answering all questions. It was through there that I found out I was off review. Neither your investigator nor psychologist will call you to let you know the status so make sure to be on top of it. Here's the link to APD: https://nypdtraineescommunity.activeboard.com/ . Good luck to you all and hopefully we'll meet in a few weeks in the October class

My psychologist didn't request anything from me which is why I was so confused as to why I was on review. The only thing I could think of was the fact I was on academic probation when I was 18 years old during my first semester in college. I was away from home and I guess the new environment got the best of me but I picked up my grades during the second semester and forward and graduated and currently hold 2 degrees. Even with all that, I got questioned A LOT by my psychologist so i'm guessing that's what it was. We will never know why we're on review or DQ'ed. They do not give any information, which sucks.

Ah ok, yeah I only ask because I myself was Psych Discontiued from Jan-July because documents were requested, so since July I’ve been on Psych review. I was also contacted by APD to redo my mini and jst so I’ve been pretty much been sitting in limbo since July, my Psych recieved everything, investigator has everything, im also a promotional but as of last week im still on Psych Review, nothing more. Just hoping they clear me so i can make this class

  • What do they mean by being on psych investigations?

    • Anybody here just listens to me! Quit this job and quit this hiring process.

When you just graduated, you will assign to the worst precinct (only you have hooked up), you wear body camera in front of criminals. Something goes wrong, you will get fired. NYPD is getting worst, because of Mayor Bill de Blasio bull**** policy.

The starting salary is low too, even you work for three years. Never get 3000 after taxes, only when you do overtime. You gonna wait 5.5 years to get a big check and body camera won't get you to work easy, it getting harder and harder.

It is best to do a court officer, port authority police or MTA police.

I’m a school safety Agent hoping to become a Police Officer myself, and I can tell you one thing, Politics are always going to be there, but you have audacity to talk the job down like its a universal problem for everyone, perhaps it’s just a ‘You’ problem. Any dept will run like this “ You play stupid games, you win stupid prizes” dont down play others ambitions just because you suck at what you do. Lesson of the day...this ain’t it Chief? 10-04? 10-04!

As an CO trying to transfer over to PD I can understand your gripe. I worked some crappy housing areas when I started and was envious of officers I came out the academy with who had sweet/easy posts. In the long run it made me a better officer. Furthermore the whole aspect of the LE profession is changing, some for the better some for the worst. If you really learn your job and understand what governs you as an officer the job might become easier.

I agree, I'll take east NY, Staten Island over a DQ.

    • Hello, I had a crazy couple of days with finding out information. I finished everything in August, JST, mini med, psych and all that. I haven't heard anything since then. I've been reading a lot of stuff in this forum the past couple days, and I called APD yesterday to see what my status was. They told me that it says I am on psych review still. They told me the next academy is on the 24th so I was getting worried. I called APD psych department today to see if I could get more information, and I explained that I'm going for SSA role and that I'm told I'm on psych review, but I didn't receive any NOPD letter or anything like that. I was told that the next SSA hire isn't until January, and the PO hire is this 24th. I didn't know they were separate like that, so I thanked him for this information.

I've been reading that being on psych review is bad and you may never get off of it. But he said since I'm going for SSA, the psychs probably haven't even looked over my file yet because they were focused on getting POs in for the next academy, and that I could call back in a month again to check my status.

So do you guys think there's still a chance that I can get cleared for the January academy? I got a long way to go for that, I just don't know how the process works.

Unless you withdraw or are dq’ed theres a chance. How likely you get cleared in time for an upcoming class is a different story.

Don't lose hope. I took oral and written psych in February and was recently cleared last month in September. I was in there for 20 mins and no documents were requested of me from my psychologist. In other words, whether you were in there for 20 mins like me and no docs requested, or in there for 2 hours like some and docs requested, there's no way in telling why you're on review or how long. Just be patient but email them every so often to check on your status. Best of luck to you.

    • Thanks for the comments above guys. I spoke with him for only about 30 minutes or so, I thought it went pretty well. I am a little worried though because I was 100% honest with him and I feel I may have said some stupid things that could give him a reason to DQ me. I did say that I've felt depressed before. Like when I was in school, just like a lack of energy, but you power through it and do what you gotta do. Also last year when I was moved from full time at my last job to part time, and I was looking for a new job, that was a tough time for me because it took about 6 - 7 months to find a new job and it wasn't a fun time. I never took any medicine for it, but last year I went to the doctors and told my doctor this and he prescribed me something, but I never picked it up and used it. He asked for my medical records because of that most likely to see what I was prescribed. I don't even remember what I was prescribed because I never picked it up. I don't know if he will have a reason because of this.

Something stupid I've also said was I had a panick attack once or twice but I mean it's not like an occurring thing, it's only happened those times. There's gotta be very little people that never have a panic attack at least once maybe? I remember he asked me if I had trouble breathing during these times or chest pains, which I said I did not.

I feel like I shoulda just kept these things to myself, but I was very honest with him

I dont think you should have said things voluntarily if it wasnt relevant to the question she/he asked. Short and simple answers was never the wrong way to go. Always follow up consistently to keep your name relevant. Its for a job! Also dont limit your questions to just your psych or investigator, email candidate relations directly. Email APD also. They all have the option to run your exam and list as you identification & update you about as much info that they can. You work hard for something bad enough, they’ll hand it to you!

snooby the depression and prescribed medication will certainly be a cause of concern. Especially since it was fairly recent. The Panic attacks also.
Pay attention to the climate we are in regarding police shootings.
As an officer you may encounter extremely dangerous volatile situations. What happens if you panic and it results in a unnecessary injury or loss of life. Knowing this you fall into a serious depression and take someone's life or your own. Of course this an extreme scenario but how could the Dept. justify your hire? The more time removed from the incident the better it looks on your behalf

    • Has anyone ever had 2 psychologists interview them during the oral? Took mine recently and had 2 psych doctors interview me at the sametime for over an hour and 30minutes. Just curious if anyone had the same experience. They requested medical records.
