  • Bad Credit

Hi, my husband is going through the hiring process right now. His credit is great and mine, not so much. Because I have bad credit, will that affect him on getting the job?

it's actually for a town on Long Island.

I highly doubt in any way shape or form, your credit has any impact on his credit for getting hired.

Not every agency does a credit check.

NYPD just recently started the credit check as part of their backround in the past 2 years maybe.

Who knows what the requirment for the LI TOWN department has.

      Goodluck and dont worry.

With everything that is going on today I highly doubt that someone would get disqualified because of bad credit. What if a person had great credit and with in the last 2 years had to file bankruptcy because they lost their job and couldn't keep up with there bills. I really don't think they would hold it against the person, especially if that's the only thing that is not good!!!

          Let me guess. Southhampton? Lol.

If his is good, I probably wouldn't worry much. They might only check his credit.

From hear-say, I;ve heard that NYPD checks your credit only to see how much debt your in. That you won't be some type of liability. If you owe a ton of money and your going for a job that starts out in the low 40's, theyll probably be concerned about corruption. Other than that I dont think they even care if youre in collections for small amounts.

In regards to your original question, your credit wont affect his hiring process unless you have joint accounts in delinquency. Even if that is the case, all you have to do is contact the collection agency or card issuer and have them put you on a payment plan. When you do that they send you a paymeny agreement in the mail specifying the terms yadayadayada... You would then give this paper to his investigator, and voila! hes in the clear. So theoretically he can have 10 accounts in collections and come up with a payment arrangement for each one and be just as fine, in the investigation process, as someone with an excellent payment history.

It is illegal and discriminatory not to hire a candidate that has bad credit. Having bad credit has nothing to do with whatever you're doing. I'm not too sure where it's at but there are employer's getting sued over it and loosing. On the other hand, that doesn't say that they will say something else to fire ya lol. Lastly your credit shouldn't affect your husband's.

Ill have to disagree with you on bad credit has nothing to with whatever your doing. It shows a lack of responsibility if you are charging things that you are unable to pay for. When in a hiring process everything is looked at to see if you are responsible and if you are showing you are not then you may be put to the side. Of course everyone has their own situation.

Your credit will not have a great impact on your hiring process for NYPD and Suffolk from what i have seen, but their are agencies out of NY that will not hire you if you have VERY bad credit. I know TSA (not a LEO position) will not hire if you have very high debt.

I know a guy who was DQ'd from NYPD process for bad credit...I guess it makes sense in way...that person might have had a greater chance of taking a bribe or keeping drug money...stuff like that...people do crazy S*** when they are in debt...I even heard of cops, from time to time, robbing banks....Remember the 21 year old rookie NYPD officer who drove to PA and robbed a bank...

According to Pennsylvania authorities, a 21-year-old NYPD rookie cop stole $113,000 from

Listen this topic has be revisited so many times, bad credit does play a part in your hiring process but its not major. As long as you have attempted to correct your credit woes and explain in your background packet why your credit is the way it is you should not have a problem.

I will be the first to tell you when I got hired my credit wasn't the best. I had no problem giving my investigator my credit report because yrs prior I have been actively working to improve my credit and it reflected on the report. I told my BI the reason why my crdit was ****ty was because of college and using crdit for everything and being young and immature.. she had no problem with that and I continued on in my process.

Bad credit is not the end all be all of you getting hired or not but it is certain illegal not to hire you based on credit alone without them allowing you to explain why your credit is bad.

When you look at a persons credit report u can pretty much tell how that person is with finances. You have good/bad credit and then you have bad/bad credit.

Example of good/bad credit is you going through a divorce, you improving your credit where on multiple items it states item disputed my consumer etc.. you lost your job

Bad/bad credit is when u max out a credit card and do not pay it back.

No I don't have anything to back that up with. I wish I did though, sorry. That's just the word on the street.
