Im signed up for the NYC civil service exam and have a few questions about it. I am not familiar with civil service exams since they do not have those where I live. Around here you typically send a resume and show up for the written exam on a certain day. From what I understand I basically just go down in March to take the exam and then I am put on a list to take the written and physical test? Say I was going to be in the hiring process would I have to move to new york before i even get the job or could i just move their once I am offered a job?

the way it works from what i remember ( i took the test for the first time like 6 years ago and then again like 4) you take the test and then wait for your results. If you recieve a passing grade you will get a mailing stating such with your exam number and the list number. They will also give you a date and time to report for the medical, if you are 21 years old and have your 60 college credits at this time you can go and start the process. The first step is character investigation (filling out a ton of paper work) and taking the medical. After that you will be assigned an investigator and given further instructions on the process provided how you do at the medical. From my understanding you can do the pre- employment screening ( medical, psych, JST) and all that while not being a NYC resident. you must have relocated to NYC by the time of appointment to the position, basically right before your hired. hope it helps some. -
Thank you for that info. Do you think it is worth my while taking the test? I know the hiring process takes a long time but right now I have an associate's degree in Criminal Justice and working towards my Bachelor's but I am only going to be 21 when i take the exam. I don't mind being on a list for a while but I wonder if I will be at the bottom of the list since I am an out of state resident and don't have my bachelor's degree yet.Comment

I have to agree take it now...the first time i took the test i was the minimum 17 and 1/2 years old!! I re-took it when i was in college and was determined to get my degree before i went to the nypd and believe me it helps to pass the time being on that list while you have college to take your mind off the wait.... the hire based upon your exam number and list number and the exams are good for 4 years so absolutely take that test! goodluckComment
