The direct link is not there but H1N1 or swine flu is not the 1918 flu. This forcing the shot on healthcare workers is just the Start.

Officers you are next along with Teachers ect... then the general public.

I see your point; mandatory shots for all public workers seems eminent. However, I'm not sure if the public healthcare debate has any influence on the decision of albany to institue mandatory injections in the same way they have instituted mandatory liability insurance on automibles. It is clear that you are worried and that the country seems to be losing more liberties daily. Right now the public heathcare option is all but an option. The future will reveal whether it becomes something "laid down" or not. In the mean time, it might be better if we all stop speculating and watch, listen and learn for ourselves.

Forced immunization regardless of "blue" or "red" state divides has nothing to do with the proposed health care reform.

We've had required immunization for more than 150 years, all in the interest of preventing the spread communicable diseases and the consequent toll upon the population. The first required immunization -- for small pox -- occurred in Britain in 1853.

If you don't like the idea of required immunizations, consider this: how high would your health insurance premiums be if polio, small pox, measles, mumps (yes, you can die from those), diptheria, and all the rest we are immunized for remained uncontrolled? What cost would their be in terms of increased work absentia? HOw hard would your jobs be if, for instance, 10-15% of your co-workers were out sick on any given day? What if, in addition to being concerned about getting shot, you also had to be concerned about getting one of those diseases if you made contact with someone else? These days you DO have to be concerned about HIV exposure. What if you had to be concerned about all those other diseases?

What would your position be if you acquired the swine flu from a health care worker?

Health care workers especially have always had certain required immunizations precisely because they have responsibility to reduce the risk of infection for their patients. There is nothing new about this.

I don't usually agree with RubyRose, but here she is right. I don't know how old you are....but I remember iron lungs for polio sufferers. Nothing wrong with mandatory immunization to save lives. That and mandatory quarantines have been done in this country in the past. The public good can easily overcome an individual's "rights".

hell even the vaccine maker is advising their family members do not get the vaccine if that does not make you say why? then by all means get the swine flu shot... but I will not nor will anyone in my family and noone is going to force us in the name of the public good not now not ever.

As a healthcare worker in NY I have feelings on both sides. I get my flu shot every year either way and it does **** me off that they are trying to mandate it. It would be stupid for any clinician (except those allergic to eggs, which is a contraindication) to not get the shot. The amount of people that get sick after getting the shot is slim to none. 15 years I have been getting it, never got sick from it and haven't had the flu since I was a kid.
LINY, your aunt doesn't have to get the shot if she can document an allergy or adverse affect to the vaccine. Tell her to call her Dr. not her lawyer!
