I lived up there for awhile and really liked it, even took the RPD test. Unless things have changed, I think you are required to show residency before proceeding further in the process after the exam.
You may also want to see if the Monroe County Sheriff is hiring, that is the same region."The wicked flee when no man pursueth
but the righteous are bold as a lion"
Proverbs 28:1, inscription beneath NLEOM lion.sigpic -
The dept like any has it's good and bad but overall it is a very good dept. The area You will be able to find some great places to live here. The taxes are high and the area has been in a economic slump for many years but really in the summer maybe with the exception of a few rare years the summer is about the best in this country. Western NY has almost perfect weather not to hot not to muggy. We do not get Tornadoes, Hurricanes, huge Fires, Mudslides, or huge floods that will destroy your home. Now the Fall is ok - Winter welllllllll winter just sucks in WNY not much else to say so if you can tolerate that your good. The state is a divided state by that I mean WNY is not in any way shape or form related to Downstate/NYC area we do not even have the same accent. Sadly most of what happens in the state is dictated by NYC.Upstate is mostly conservative verses NYC which is a huge liberal umm area. You will get very good training here a world class 911 center and overall a very good working relationship with the other dept's in the area.If you like being busy you will definitly get that in certain areas of RPD and then there are sections of the city-- not many but charlotte is more like working in a suburban town than the city. The dept needs to go back to having at least 4 sections but with the current mayor running unapposed that will not happen. The 2 section city had his handprint so he will never say it's not working. The pay in RPD is good maybe not as high as long island but you can buy a very decent home in Rochester for 200k try that anywhere downstate.Comment

Morale, whats that ? RPD morale sucks and the rank and file has been getting **** on for years by the *** kissers in the dept.
If you want to stay busy, then you will with RPD, but there have been so mant restarints on the patrol officers it's a joke now. It's very sad because the department use to be amongst the top in the nation and the training was paramount. Not too many departments look at RPD any more for their training methods anymore.
The East /West section really sucks because you can't really get the people to know you because you are working such a big area. It was better when there were section offices and you had multiple carbeats within those sections and the same officers were assigned that carbeat. It was something you could take pride in.
Right now there are about 773 officers within the RPD and a typical class size is between 30-60. It depends on the budget that the city has set aside. But beware, the stimulus money that is being injected into local law enforcement here is only good for 1 year. Within a couple of years you could be looking for a new department because of it.Comment

The money is good and the overtime is pretty good. Contact the recruitment office and ask about the residency requirement. I think the residency requirement may have been lifted, not 100% on that though.Comment

RPD FAQ
Pretty much answers basic questions.
Is there a residency requirement to become a Rochester Police Officer?
No, but after being hired you will be required to reside in Monroe County or one of the seven surrounding counties. (Monroe, Wayne, Ontario, Livingston, Genesee, Wyoming and Orleans Counties).
Is there a benefit to residing in the City of Rochester?
Yes, city employees are eligible for up to $6,000 assistance in closing costs towards the purchase of a city house. There is also an “Officer Next Door†program where officers can buy select houses at up to 50% off of sale price.

Or maybe it's sour grapes. Or a burr up your rear end. Whatevah.
I don't "know it all." I DO know how to google. ANYBODY could have done that.
You don't need a frickin badge to use google.
You are just p-o'ed because I answered the question with facts when you just speculated off the top of your head instead of taking 30 seconds to do a search.Last edited by rubyrose; 09-23-2009, 02:18 AM.Hatred never ceases by hatred, but by love alone is healed.

I think you better re-read my posts again , there's no speculation, but there is the fact that you can't keep that big sewrer of your closed because you think you have to comment on "EVERYTHING". For get the google, contact the recruitment office, just because it's on google doesn't make it a fact.
Try reading and comprehending next time you wind bag. No wonder people like you get arrested and evicted from their apartments, you just don't know when to shut up.Comment

The answer was on the official RPD website. It wasn't google that gave the answer. It was a google search that lead me to that RPD FAQ.
If the answer is wrong, you should take it up with the RPD, not me, since nothing goes on the RPD website without their approval.
I started to respond to the OP using my own recollections. Then I thought, well, maybe my recollections aren't accurate. Why not google to check? Turned out my recollections WERE wrong.
So I posted the link to the RPD FAQ. What is WRONG with that? It gave a factual response from the RPD itself! You can't get more official than that! You want someone to call the recruitment office when the answer is right there plain as day?
As for "not knowing when to shut up" - I barely post here anymore, and when I do it is usually supportive, or it has to do with non-police matters (there are whole sections here that have little to nothing to do with LE!).
BTW, I have never been arrested. I've never even been a SUSPECT in a crime. Whatever made you think I'd been arrested? That's the most absurd statement I've heard from you, bar none.
Again, you are disgruntled because I found the answer, so you make up stuff.
Also, the eviction happened because drug dealers in the neighborhood threw rocks through my downstairs neighbors' windows, and my landlady blamed ME for that. The first two weeks at my current apartment the same thing happened -- you know, the dealers hate it when someone calls 911 on their illegal activities, so they try to scare you into stopping. My current landlord stood by me, and guess what? There are a whole lot fewer drug transactions going on now. And there are a whole lot of officers who credit me with that.
Now, if you have a problem with people calling 911 when they see crimes happening, maybe it's a good thing you are "medically" retired.Last edited by rubyrose; 09-23-2009, 01:16 PM.Hatred never ceases by hatred, but by love alone is healed.

Ruby,
again your an ignorant know it all idiot. If I told you once I told you a hundred times and re read and comprehend. Seeing yourr too stupid to do that and just flap you gums then you deserve every bashing you get because your nothing more than a civilian that wants to ride on a cops lap because you couldn't make it you wannabe.
RIIIIIIIIIIGGHHHTT RUBY, you got evicted because you caused too many problems in the neighborhood, you should leave the real police work to the pros, and you definetly don't have what it takes to be a police officer, so move along with that whiny little yap of yours.
Maybe when you learn RPD protocol you can chime in, until then butt out of police matters, you suck at it.Comment

Ok, let's face it. You are a frickin' jerk to beat the band. And you know absolutely nothing about me. And you hate civilians, period. Except for civilians who kiss your A55.
GAWD. The assumptions you make. I'm glad you aren't out there on the streets where you could be doing some serious damage.
Wannabe? You're an idiot if you have taken that idea from ANYTHING that I have ever said here.
The only thing I "wannabe" is a private citizen who has a bit of peace and quiet. YOu know what a great job the police have done providing that in the public market area. The corner I lived on has been dominated by 4 generations of drug dealers. The are STILL there. Great job handling it on your own!
WANNABE? Oh yeah, sure. I'd give anything to NOT have to deal with this s**t. I'd give anything to NOT have a reason to know any cops at all. I'd give anything to go back to being someone who went for YEARS without ever needing to even SPEAK to a cop, much less know one.
RE-read? YOu STILL haven't comprehended one iota of what I said.
I tell you what *I* have comprehended from YOUR blather:
To you, a "know it all" is anyone who knows something YOU don't and doesn't keep it to herself.
To you, a "wannabe" cop is anyone who actually cares enough about her neighborhood to work with the police instead of griping about how they aren't doing their jobs.
You've surely got a burr up your rear-end about civilians. You are one angry cop.
Now, I have said all I'm going to say about this, so you can come back and spew your hostility all you want. You haven't said a single word that made any sense or had any correlation to reality since you responded to my first post. There's no reason to believe your next post will be worth reading.
All this hostility because I posted a link to an RPD web page that actually answered the OP's question. Unbelievable!
Oh yeah, about that RPD protocol. Yeah, I'm supposed to be demure and keep my mouth shut even when I know the answer to something. Well guess what? That sort of "protocol" means you keep doing the same old same old even if it isn't working.
Protocol, shmotocal. I'm not a cop, I don't wannabe, and I don't have to follow your protocol.
Yeah, that's what gets to you. I'm too frickin uppity.Last edited by rubyrose; 09-23-2009, 08:31 PM.Hatred never ceases by hatred, but by love alone is healed.
