NYPD and out of state hires

I was wondering what the process is for out of state hiring with NYPD.

For those of you who were hired by NYPD and came from out of state, did you establish residency before or after you started the academy?

Did you out of state hires pack your stuff, move to NY, and wait for the call?

Does the NYPD let you establish residency after you have started the academy?

Had a legal place to live ready to go if called.
When called it was long weekend could not get NYDL.
Went for new NYDL after indoc at Queens college, since MV was closed by time indoc was dismissed.
Things change, check above with your BI when you get one.

So technically you do not need a NYDL at the time of appointment to academy?

You "need" one, but depending on the number of people there, they might be more inclined to give you a few days to update your personal information.
